Macklin and Geale were ranked to the top 5 at the fight time, I wouldn't call Brook and Lemieux miles better than him
He has never been a speed demon, but it's true for a couple of years now he seems less fast. I disagree he didn't look good though, he still looked very good. He's a bit slower, and less explosive - but still very sharp, with excellent timing and accuracy, and of course fuck loads of power. He's still awesome at setting up his shots too. I mean think about it, Jermell is prime and very highly rated, and yet not only did Vanes go the distance, he was not in any trouble whatsoever. Golovkin walked through him like nothing, dispatched him round 2 without even really leaving 2nd gear. If that's not looking good, then wtf is looking good? I mean, for a 36 year old attacking fighter - obviously a young man's style - he was pretty fucking impressive.
While i disagree, thats irrelevant. The point is that the 5 later guys were, in aggregate, much much better than the 5 former. Which is why its a completely useless analysis by hbo
Vanes was coming off a two year layoff, though. That said, it looked to me like Golovkin was going through the motions in that first round. It looked like he was almost too relaxed. I think Vanes tagging him with that right hand woke him up and he started to cut the ring off in the second, and his power did the rest. I think Gennady looked ok. It's never easy to change in mid camp preparations for a different opponent. I think he'd have his hands full with Charlo. At this point, I'd says it's about even money.
I'll sigbet anyone that Golovkin beats either Charlo. Charlos are very good, both of them, but they simply do not have the style to beat Gennady. Are they going to outgun him? Of course not. Golovkin is more powerful with more sneaky offense. They are too hittable and too straightforward to come close to beating Golovkin. Someone like Hopkins has the style to beat Gennady, someone who can neutralise his power and basically just stink out a win.
That's what I think also. And I have the feeling that the Charlos are not the most durable of fighters. I think that they would give him hell for a bit, but eventually. GGG would get to them imo. Yeah, Hopkins would completely befuddle GGG
Same. Sometimes I wonder if people are just kind of imagining things when a fighter hits mid 30's, dunno, like they expect them to be worse so kind of project that in their mind. Like I said, the only thing I have noticed is a slight loss of speed, as you might expect, but that happens to the best of them - even fighters that age really well, it's to be expected. Also "like I said before" he was never a speed demon anyway, so it's never been a major part of his style.
I think it's a defense mechanism to be honest. A lot of persons were expecting him to blow out Canelo and Jacobs (me included when it comes to Jacob), so they prefer to put the relative closeness of the fight on a so-called GGG decline, rather than admit that they misjudge the fighters involved. It's also a way, at least for some, to insure that Canelo gets no credit if he manages to beat GGG in the rematch. After all, he would have only beaten an old man
Calling ggg in decline because he didn't appear quite as super-human against top competition as he did against lesser opponents is a bit like selling stocks low and buying hi.
Maybe, but it isn't that far-fetched to think that a guy of that age and after shitloads of ammy fights might be on some decline, nobody has called him shot. Hopkins kept beating Murats and Ornelases as easily as ever in his forties but that doesn't mean he hadn't slipped at all. For the record, I'd pick prime Hopkins over Ggg with room to spare
he should just focus on calling what he sees. Imagine if Lennox was commentating and someone got a close decision and he's all like if it were me I would get robbed blah blah blah ...its not about you... get over yourself. You're a commentator now..
For what I recall it was a rough foul-fest, and according to two judges Hopkins won 119-108, though that doesn't quite describe the fight. Also, that hardly was the point
Its ggg own fault that we dont have the luxury of knowing how he would have done against top notch opposition when he was younger. He was happy to waste these years fighting bums. And when you compare his recent performance against a no hopper in vanes, theres nothing to suggest hes slipping
If GGG isn't slipping, then he'd be the first fighter the history of boxing to reign as champion for 8 consecutive years, and be in the late 30s, yet still remain in his prime. Your point about his opposition is valid. He DOES deserve criticism for his resume, although, his resume would have looked a bit better if a still prime Sergio Martinez didn't duck him,
Prime? I realize there's a difference between a fighter's peak and their prime but I doubt there's been anybody who in their prime at 36 unless they were a very late bloomer.
Is Golovkin at his absolute best, fastest and sharpest? Possibly not, but at the same time, there's no clear, obvious signs of slippage. Like JOM said, there's no difference between this GGG and the Geale one really. If you compare performances - speed, sharpness, the amount of times Gennady got hit clean etc - it's the same guy. At this point it's really fucking obvious neither Floyd or Pacquiao are the same fighters they were in their prime. Gennady basically is, maybe just a slightly slower version. So IMO it's crazy talk to say he didn't look good or this performance wasn't impressive. He stopped a guy in 2 rounds, easily, with basically the first offense that he mounted. A guy that had never been stopped before, or to my knowledge, close to being stopped. I think Golovkin is still clearly the best middleweight in the world, I'll take him over anyone, with confidence.
Knew it. Canelo has no desire for rematch. He knows he would lose. Osullivan is a bum who would probably lose to Matyrosin
If there's no rematch in September, there won't be one. Which is fine by me... we already know who the better fighter is.
This isn't official news, Double. Neil is just speculating. But I tend to agree with him. I don't think the rematch is gonna happen. I think we will in fact see Clenelo vs O'Bumillivan in September.
