Not necessarily great “fights” but great matchups.

With the prospect of so many great matchups to be made and knowing that in the 2010s it’s getting increasingly harder with the money, politics and competing networks to get these fights made...let’s first look back at some meaningful matchups that happened at the right time when both fighters were in their primes, at their peaks and at weights that suited them.

    Chavez Taylor 1
    Trinidad Vargas
    Trinidad De La Hoya
    Leonard Hearns 1
    De La Hoya Quartey
    Hopkins Trinidad
    Barrera Morales 1
    Mayweather Corrales
Juan Manuel Marquez Manny Pacquiao 1
Ali Frazier 1 (although Ali wasn’t peak IMO, we have to include this since he was undefeated and it was a great great matchup)

    What others?

quartey had fought once in the prior 22 months before facing delahoya. trinidad was hardly as his prime weight facing delahoya either.

What is the difference between peak and prime? Can a fighter be at his peak but not in his prime?

No, but he can be in his prime but not at his peak (injured, inactive...etc). Ali was still in his prime in the first Frazier fight but he wasn’t at his peak

Yup. I've said it many times before, Ike was already past his peak by time he fought Oscar.

    94-96 was peak Quartey.

Both Hopkins and Calzaghe looked to be peaking (in terms of performances) going into their fight but neither man was prime
