Anybody see this one? I had already seen it when it first came out (bout four years ago) but I re-watched it this week on Netflix.

EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT movie! One of the best crime dramas made in the past 8 years.

Oscar Isaac should have been at least nominated for Best Actor for his performance.

Yeah it might be like that. If you look at the first thread for this film that Anthony posted, I killed this film in my review. However I’m willing to accept this film might be like There Will Be Blood.

I initially thought TWBB was the worst piece of film making in years and I didn’t get it at first. Later, after catching it on HBO a few times it became a rewatchable film I could jump in at any point and enjoy. So maybe I’ll give AVY another chance at some point.

I thought TWBB was a masterpiece upon first viewing. And it still is after having watched multiple times.

No Country For Old Men is the one I was underwhelmed with the first time I saw it, then realized it was brilliant upon rewatch.

You mean you don’t think I would like it on a few rewatches? Why? I thought you liked it. What’s the difference between the two?

Two different levels. Not even fair to compare them.

TWBB is probably best movie made in the last 20 years. I would say it is.

A Most Violent Year is no classic, just a really really solid movie.

TWBB was a boring film with a great actor doing his damnedest to make it not boring

I've watched it over ten times and it never bores me. And your opinion is in the extreme minority, as it's rightfully considered a modern classic.

It's not a one-man show either - part of what makes it so great is the rivalry between DDL and Paul Dano, as Dano himself turned in a brilliant performance.

Nope I'm totally right. I'm the best. So good, so fine.

Just about Anybody else in DDL's place and the film isn't worth sitting through.

The same could be said for MANY classics!

If a lesser actor than De Niro starred in Taxi Driver, then TD isn't worth shit either.

Nah... it's a great film, great story, great direction... still good with a different good actor

TWBB is all DDL ... nobody else really fits as that character... totally overrated film

NCFOM... now THAT is a great film

I think Paul Thomas Anderson had a big hand in making "There Will Be Blood" a great film. It wasn't all DDL.

Just the general atmosphere, cinematography and sense of dread throughout the movie is a pretty neat trick the director and crew pulled off. DDL certainly helped, but PTA has proved he can make damn good movies without him.

As for the movie mentioned in the thread, I haven't seen it and didn't know it was on Netflix. I remember being somewhat intrigued when it came out. Might check it out now.

    Exactly.

Cdogg is acting like some novice directed TWBB.

Anderson is one of the truly best directors in the business.

  19. There Will Be Blood.

I haven't seen this movie and I don't intend to.
I know someone who rates it so highly though but his personality tells me everything I need to know about this being a really fucking boring movie.

    5/10

What a cunt! You claim "Point Break 2015" is one of your favorite movies ever, and yet you won't watch "There Will Be Blood"????

Not enough "Cowabunga Dude!" for your tastes, ya fuckin' hippie?

  21. No, but there a certain movies and TV shows (Breaking Bad, Games of Thrones, etc), that the people I know who go way, way overboard with praise for them...and these people I know are either arty types or have fuck-all idea about Movies or TV shows, that I already know a) I'll hate it b) it'll be hard work or c) shit or....d) all of these

Do I make myself perfectly clear?

    Good.

    Laters, cunt.

    Fixed

Only thought Boogie Nights came close to matching the hype... the rest are all overrated and turgid, self-consciously "heavy" films

How does a movie director earn the label, "try hard?" Are we sure we know what that term means?

The line of questioning is indeed relevant. Your entire persona presumes some intellectual superiority you've yet to actually demonstrate. Examples to the contrary are instrumental in rehabilitating this poor board who has been subjected to your repeated abuse and pig-headedness. Answer the question fuck face.

I demonstrate it every time I interact with you, shitbird

You asked two inane questions, not one

    1) How does a movie director earn the label, "try hard?"

    2) Are we sure we know what that term means?

    Answers:

    1) He gets called one by me by being one in my opinion

    2) There's several variations on what it means. It isn't defined in the dictionary. In the way I'm using it, it would be someone earnestly attempting something beyond their capabilities

PTA's films all strike me as desperately wanting to be seen as heavy, substantial... Like he saw a truly great film and had a Walter Mitty moment about making one of his own... that's harsh but I'm only contrasting his work (which I think is good at best) with what I would regard as great

    Guess "try-hard" has multiple definitions.
