any recommendations?


i just got done watching this German gem

 

Not a fan of the genre

Everest and Touching the Void are great

are those others documentaries? on imdb they seem to be

 

Some are docs some are combo docs with recreations/re-enactments using real climbers.

"Into Thin Air" was the original Everest movie, made for TV years ago. Some people don't like it, but I remember it being pretty solid.

There are some great mountaineering docs out there. It's hard for the theatrical versions to do the concept justice.

There's even a reality series on Everest they did several years ago for 2 or 3 seasons, which was fascinating to me. I think it might still be floating around on On-Demand. I don't think it lasted long because it was a little too high stakes for public consumption. Dead bodies, people getting killed, climbers constantly put (or putting themselves) in legitimate life changing danger.

Everest is the best I've seen in this genre.

There's Vertical Limit, which nobody has mentioned yet. Pretty meehhh movie, but okay for one viewing.

 

This one is good, up until about the last 20 minutes, when they're not on the mountain anymore, and it all goes to shit.

Plus, I've always had a thing for Melissa George and her pouty face.

 

Yeah- not a fan of seeing movies about these nutjobs drive their bodies to the limit to climb to their death on some cold lonely mountaintop. Its strikes somewhat close to home as I have a family member who is into that sort of thing- and while he is miraculously still around he has had acquaintances meet brutal deaths in these places.

 

Most of these films are pretty depressing, especially Vertical Limit which along with Cliffhanger opens with one of the more hopeless situations out there. I’ve also seen Everest (16) and Touching The Void and they’re all pretty sad and depressing.
