ok let’s hear it! Now...let me caution you...before your knee jerk reactions cause you to say stuff like Hagler total domination or hagler KO 5 or some other nonsense...GGG hit harder than Hagler and this is an objective fact. Also Hagler couldn’t stop Duran who hearns had wiped out in 2. Hagler took 11 rounds to finish Mugabi who Norris wiped out in one. Hacker couldn’t put a dent in Ray Leonard who was a former welterweight, hadnt fought in 3 years, had been dropped by Kevin Howard in his previous fight would be dropped by both Lalonde and Hearns in successive fights. Hagler’s best results were against former lightweights welterweights and Jnr middleweights...Canelo is a solid middleweight nowadays with a solid chin and heavy hands. So, now that I’ve educated some of you let’s consider the matchup. I say Hagler wins but close decision because of his southpaw style and relentless stamina as well as adamantium chin but it’s a distance fight and it’s conpetitive.
hagler by commanding decision. Canelo wouldn't be able to deal with that blackness, swiftness and southpawness
As great as Hagler was I don't think he stops Canelo. Not only does Alvarez have a good beard, but he'd be considerably bigger than the Marvelous one once they enter the ring. Hagler was still on a different level skill wise and had endless stamina. I think he wins something like 9-3 or at absolute worst 8-4.
I don't think it's all that competitive. Hagler's size, strength, and stamina would be too much for Canelo. He'd back him up all night and consistently hurt him with a sustained attack to the head and body. I don't think Canelo hits hard enough to discourage him either. Hagler wears him down and either takes a convincing UD or a possible late rounds stoppage, depending on how much damage he can accumulate on a tiring Canelo.
Hagler was more of a patient boxer than he was a tough guy pressure fighter. Therefore it’s likely that this remains a tactical fight and therefore highly unlikely hagler stops him especially considering that Haglers power is nowehere near as powerful as the Hearns fight suggests...and we must all concede now that Canelo’s chin is solid
There's a very real possibility of Hagler stopping Canelo on attrition. For one thing, Hagler's power is underrated on this forum. Just because he wasn't Julian Jackson, too many idiots on here act like he was feather fisted. Prime Hagler was one of the most ACCURATE punchers of all time, and one thing Saturday night was that Canelo's defense is overrated. Old man Golov was nailing him anytime he could let his hands go. Early 80s Hagler would more-less nail the Ginger at will - that's no exaggeration. Canelo would have ZERO answer for Hagler's southpaw jab. Zero. Canelo's face would be a bloody mask by the late rounds.
I think he would cut him up and make mince meat of him, down the stretch. He's got a long, raking jab, he can switch, he made shit of guys in the Canelo mould, like Tony Sibson.
He's a short, short-limbed muscled, physical guy. Sure, Sibson was more face-first but Canelo isn't exactly hard to find. Alvarez is hard to hit with the follow up but he's not hard to hit with the opening shots and the jab is something Hagler executes well.
Hagler would win but Canelo would be a more formidable opponent than anyone hagler had beaten not named Thomas hearns. Even then...hearns was never known for his chin or resolve, formerly at Welterweight Leonard had him hurt frequently. Canelo hits hard, has a solid chin and has decent offensive and defensive skills. Has anyone ever gone to Hagler’s body the way Canelo would?
I don't think Canelo is any harder or physically better than John Mugabi. It's really insane to think of how good some of the guys were back then. You say Sibson this and Sibson that............Sibson fought guys like Finnegan, Hagler, Minter, Tate. For Hagler there was Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Mugabi, Antuofermo, Minter. Alvarez has pretty much lost at least 2 of 3 fights to GGG and Floyd and beaten nobody of the above caliber of man, much less fucking fight them.
Canelo is much tougher than Mugabi, may not hit as hard but he has a much tougher chin no doubt. Canelo is also a smarter fighter than mugabi and Canelo is naturally bigger
Lemme get this straight... Ginger cant even legitimately beat Lara, and runs close with Trout, and hes gonna push Marvin fucking Hagler to the brink?
Mugabi was never the same after the Hagler fight. He left something in the ring that night. Hagler fucks up Canelo and yes guys hit him to the body plenty. He's quicker than GGG and he would have made Canelo pay for going to the body. His jab would mess Canelo up badly and he would gladly go into the trenches to make it a war down the stretch. Also Hagler hit the body pretty damned well himself. How does Canelo react to that especially since he could do it from both sides? Canelo would fare better with the Hagler of the Mugabi era but still loses a comfortable decision. A fresher, closer to prime Hagler has too many tools and way too much motor for Canelo to handle. It's either a wide decision or a late stoppage.
Most transparent poster in the history of this forum. "Lemme claim that Canelo could possibly beat any great in history, because ONLY Floyd is capable of dominating him." Mannn there a SHIT TON of fighters in the history of 154-160 who beat Canelo. And most of them lesser than Marvin Hagler. This guy is not a true boxing fan. He's a cheerleader.
Even with the 22 pound weight advantage, Canelo loses I still say we ought to match these modern guys with fighters the same size as them ... Canelo would need to lose 7 pounds just to be a LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT and yet he's fighting as a "Middleweight"... how's he do against Bob Foster?
I'm not sure Hagler stops him. Obviously he wins, but I see it being a wide decision rather than a stoppage. I think we can say Canelo's wobble against Cotto's bro was an aberration, he's more than proven his chin now, and whilst I agree with X that he's not particularly hard to nail with a shot, he's a hard guy to land combinations on. Still, Hagler wins handily.
He would get sparked. I mean, he'd be more sparked than Thomas Edison and Tesla combined. That's how sparked he would be.
I would take anybody over 5'10" with a good jab and a good chin and a modicum of power. He's just a very lucky guy. He's fucking got more gifts than Santa pulling out of the North Pole on the 24th.
I can't see Vargas beating Canelo. I liked Vargas, he was very good and you can't knock his resume one bit, but still, the guy just didn't move his fucking head, Canelo outpoints him going away imo.
