Vargas was a good fighter but Canelo is better. IMO vargas only lasted into the 12 round against Tito because Trinidad needed to to recover from the thumbing he got in the 3rd round. Without the thumb that fight would have ended in 5.

Against Alvarez, Vargas wouldn’t have been able to take those thudding punches in a 12 round brawl but it would have depended on how the fight went. Both Vargas and Canelo were known to Just go into boxing mode. In that type of fight anything is possible but in a war, Canelo stops him eventually.

Depends on when that fight is taking place. When Vargas was in his early 20's he had already defeated Winky Wright and Ike Quartey back to back. Then got an early knockout over not very good but very big Ross Thompson all before going to war against Trinidad.

Canelo's best wins in in the same age bracket were against a faded Mosley and Bumdomir.

Vargas peaked much earlier. Canelo will achieve more in his career but both at their bests @ 154 I lean towards Vargas. The Alvarez we saw on Saturday is a different story.

I don't think Canelo is in a different class than Vargas. I'm not even sure he's better

I think Canelo is better suited to be a middleweight than Vargas.

But at 154, there's no evidence to support Canelo being in a different class.

I feel prime Vargas would have stopped Cotto and Trout.

I thinks Vargas just outworks him. It’s a good fight. But Vargas is a better technician, more athletic, and Canelo still fights in spurts way too much for me to see objectively winning the rounds against Vargas.

In reality, Vargas wins a clear UD. On the cards, I see a split decision for Vargas.

I think Canelo is a very good fighter, but in the late 90s/early 2000s at 154/160, I’m not 100% convinced he reigns as a champion. Not if the likes of Trinidad and De La Hoya are around.
