Yet another Netflix original. Anybody see it? It has good reviews, but from reading the premise, sounds like a ripoff of the The Wicker Man (the original).
Everything is a rip-off of something. Only so many premises to go around, but "Wicker Man" comparisons are pretty lazy. There are several common themes, but the execution is completely different. Maybe a cross between "Wicker Man" with the grittiness of "The Witch" and "The New World". It's a competent enough gothic style horror movie. A few gruesome torture scenes and can be a bit of a slow burn at times. Acting is solid, though a bit stylized and theatrical as these type of period pieces are wont to do. Better then most of the stuff Netflix churns out. Same guy who made "The Raid" movies made this, though you'd never know it, unless you already knew it. Like most of these type of movies it's a bit convoluted and disjointed with a fairly murky/sloppy ending. 7/10
