Universal & Illumination's Dr. Seuss The Grinch opened to healthy business claiming the top spot at the tune of $66 million. This marks the third biggest November debut for an animated film. Only Disney's "The Incredibles" ($70.4 million) and "Frozen" ($67.3 million) had better debuts. Internationally it had $12 million earnings for a three day $78 million global. With no other Christmas themed family film in the calendar 'The Grinch' will have all the holidays by itself to do a killing. Good marketing strategy for the non-Disney $75 million budget film.

Bohemian Rhapsody performed better than expectations taking $30.8 million in its second weekend taking the second spot and pushing its domestic cume over $100 million in just 10 days while adding $63 million overseas for a current global take of $185 million. Keep in mind this film budget was just $52 million, so after surpassing $100 million everything else is plain profit for its studio.

In the third spot the supernatural film Overlord debuted with $10 million; a bit lower than the studio expectations, but they should have released this film on Halloween, not in November.

Disney's The Nutcracker & The Four Realms which last week debuted with one of the lowest openings for a Disney big budget film since 'A Wrinkle in Time", this week didn't performed any better with an anemic $9.2 million. Its domestic cume stands at $35 million. Internationally is doing a little better, but not enough to save it from being a complete flop. Disnery can thank Marvel for its billion dollars earnings this year to mitigate the losses from three PC turkeys (Solo included)...and whoever green lighted this crap must be fired.

Rounding the top five The Girl in the Spider's Web made a better impression with critics than audiences which failed to show up as the studio was expecting, opening to a so-so $8 million. This number is awful not only for the $43 million budget film, but for the studio that was hoping to re-start the franchise (how many restarts it already had?) and adapt the rest of the books which performed better in their Swedish versions, but that hasn't made an impression with American audiences in their English reboots. Also Claire Foy, a fine actress, was totally miscast here and book fans stayed away from this version.

But this week's biggest story is Venom which finally opened in China and took an amazing $111 million in just three days! This marks the second biggest debut of a superhero film in China. The Sony film now stands at $675 million globally and can easily surpass the $800 million mark before it finishes its run, making it one the most profitable superhero origin films ever.

Exactly why the Chinesers should never be taken seriously, one itoa when it comes to movies.
    Like, Ever.

Movies to them are purely and simply, throwaway, dumb-fantasy CGI-merchandise movies that make a TON of cash.
    That´s it.

Really sad to hear The Girl In The Spider’s web flopped. I really enjoyed the reboot of Dragon Tattoo and was hoping this would do well enough for them to complete the trilogy but now they’ll probably just cancel it...again. All in all the studio probably should have stuck with the decision they made based on the first films numbers when it confirmed audiences weren’t feeling this. It could have saved them a few million.

I wouldn't worry about the studio's money too much.
