Boxing Hall of Fame Class of 2019: Jackson, McGirt, Atlas, Curry

I can't say any of these are bad choices, although I'd disagree on McGirt.

Jackson is the right choice. I mean, he's the consensus biggest P4P puncher in history, that distinction alone should get you in the Hall.

Curry should have been in. A guy like Palomino is in, and Carlos accomplished far less at welter than the fruitcake did. Curry unified welter, and beat quality fighters in his short, but excellent reign.

Then there's Buddy McGirt, who I wouldn't quite consider HOF caliber as a fighter, although he was excellent.

I guess my problem with McGirt getting in is that Mel Taylor was also on the ballot this year, and he completely wiped out McGirt in a virtuoso performance.

So if it were up to me, I would have chosen Jackson, Curry, and Taylor.

Still a lot guys who from 60s/70s are overdue to make the Hall, like Esteban DeJesus, Rodrigo Valdez, and Ernesto Marcel. Of those three, it's almost criminal that Valdez isn't in.

Still can’t believe DeJesus and Valdez aren’t in.

That said, happy to see Jackson and Curry make the hall. They’ve earned it.

Valdez and DeJesus should've been in years ago

Now that fucking Gatti is in, they should induct about 900 other guys right away

Buddy McGirt would've kicked the hell out of Gatti

I am kinda relieved though, because Hatton was on the ballot, and being that the HOF can be a popularity contest, I thought that Hatton was gonna make it over Curry.... which would have been horrible, as Hatton couldn't shine Curry's shoes. Glad they made right choices overall, but I disagree on McGirt.

Michalczewski was on the Ballot, and honestly, even DM deserved it more than McGirt.

Gatti making it was an all time low for the Hall. I can literally only think of ONE thing that would have been worse.... Mickey Ward making it.

    Especially Valdez.

Valdez is the second greatest Colombian fighter of all time, behind only Cervantes.

I actually think Cdogg's other boy, Starling, is more deserving than McGirt.

But yeah... if Gatti's in, who's really UNdeserving?

Might as well throw fuckin Angel Manfredy in.

Boxing hall of fame has been kind of a joke for a long time. Pretty much everyone knows Gatti is in there because of popularity, not accomplishments.

With that said I don't think we should be looking at who feel are the least deserving members and make the argument anybody a little better therefore belongs too. It doesn't right a wrong.

I agree. I'm not complaining awhole lot over McGirt getting in, I just find it strange because Taylor was also on the ballot, and being that McGirt didn't accomplish more than Taylor, I would have thought the tie breaker would be Mel kicking the shit outta McGirt.

    Starling definitely over McGirt

McGirt's signature win was over a fading version of a guy Starling schooled like 5 or 6 years earlier

Honestly you could legit remove 50% of the fighters from the hall if you wanted to make it really exclusive

There's already far inferior fighters to McGirt in there let alone guys like Valdez, DeJesus, Curry, Starling etc

If we're going by the Gatti standard of "action", then I dunno why Corrales isn't in. Chico was actually MORE exciting than Gatti (involved in the best fighter ever), and a much better fighter who beat much better fighters.

Here's a full list of who the nominees were this year:

    Curry
    Jackson
    McGirt
    Taylor
    Nando Vargas
    Hatton
    Rafael Marquez
    Genaro Hernandez
    DM
    Michael Moorer
    Sven Ottke

I didn't know Moorer was on the list. I'm shocked he didn't make it. First southpaw heavyweight champ... I thought that woulda got him in. Glad he didn't though. He don't deserve it.

Ottke should be inducted the same year as Canelo.

The paid off judges can come and accept the award in both their honors.

Why would I care??? I didn't know he was in it nor did I know he didn't make it... HOF is pointless... just an excuse for the old timers to dress up feel relevant for a day and slur through a 30 second acceptance speech

    Makes no sense.

Taylor's very popular too. You'd think it would be a logical choice.

I remember first looking at the list a month ago, and saying to myself without hesitation "It should be Curry, Jackson, and Taylor."

Its gotta be cause of his popularity as a trainer. Its gotta be.

Really weird that Taylor didnt make it. The guy was touted as the next Leonard for Christ sake.

At no point did Buddy receive that level of hype.

Taylor looked like the next Leonard too. You know when? When he beat the shit outta McGirt!

Given that he's better than plenty of guys in there, I'm not bothered that McGirt made it but it's bizarre he'd get in ahead of Taylor and the others we've mentioned

I think the HOF is a nice institution but you shouldn't take it THIS seriously.

It is great that we pay respect to the past generations but it isn't that big of a travesty if Rodrigo Valdez isn't in there. Hardcore fans know his worth anyway, and casuals would rush right past him to see Tyson and Leonard even if he was in. Plus, it is the hall of fame, not the hall of great.

    Chill

Yeah, it wouldn't be weird if Mel wasnt on the ballot.

Given that both were excellent, two-division champs, you would THINK the tie breaker would come down to the fact that they actually fought eachother.

I'm not gonna complain too much though, this is A LOT better than I expected.

"Like I said before", I thought Humpman Hatton was gonna get in over Curry.

I kinda knew that Julian was a lock. His power is so legendary, that I knew he was gonna be one of the three selected.

Our generation still knows about DeJesus and Valdez.

In 40 years, even hardcores of that generation will have probably forgotten about them... if they're not in the HOF by then.

For guys in the HOF, their names are actually immortal in the sport's history, so yeah, it DOES matter.

It's easy for YOU to say it doesn't matter, but I'm sure Taylor is somewhere pretty bummed out right now that he lost out to a man he soundly beat.
