Since it's #ThrowbackThursday, moving forward I figured each week I'd share a great performance from the "old days" that I love. Of course, feel free to contribute and drop your own each Thursday.

We're gonna start this series off with one of my all time favorite virtuoso performances, Eusebio Pedoroza's BRILLIANT dismantling of Patrick Ford. Enjoy, if you've never seen it...

Everything great and dastardly about Pedroza in one fight... his adaptability, all around skill, his incredible stamina, his complete disregard for the rules

That was it for Ford. He gave Sanchez a difficult night but Pedroza dished out a beating

Yeah, Ford never did anything notable again. Ruined his career.

Pedroza easily had some of the best stamina of all time. All the more reason it's a shame he didn't fight Sanchez. Both had legendary stamina.

    Great thread!

This fight to me crystallizes everything that was great about Pea. Coming off the first fight where he was robbed, Whitaker came with a chip on his shoulder.

I think it’a virtually impossible to box a more perfect fight... HONEST. This fight to me encompasses what the sweet science is all about. Use of feints, jabs, distance control, angles, counter punching, body punching, head/upper body movement, combinations of different punches, etc.

If there’s a fight that you could show someone to study as far as all those fundamentals go, this would be one of them.

It shouldn't have even come down to a rematch. Pea beat him clear as day the first time. But yeah, Pea was superb in the rematch.

I always liked the Pineda fight the most. Whitaker looked extremely solid and strong at 140.

He was also brilliant against Jake The Snake Rodriguez at 147 lbs. The way he dissected him was pure artistry.

Haugen would be second on my list. Flawless performance. Haugen to this day says Whitaker was the best he faced.

Ok for this week only, let’s make it Flash back Friday.

I love Frazier’s style. You can see what makes him so difficult to fight from the outset. The constant head and upper body movement, feints, the footwork coming forward to cut off the ring. Ellis did what he SHOULD do with the jab and movement, but it was rendered all but useless by the 2nd round. Frazier’s defense was and still is underrated too. He was adept at slipping and picking off shots.

The last left hook that finished the job was a beauty.

Yeah, Frazier-Ellis is indeed a performance for the ages. Joe beat ever living fuck outta poor Jimmy.

Dundee stopped it after the second knockdown

After the fight (separate statements to reporters)

"I was down once!", said Ellis

"That's why I stopped the fight", said Dundee

I forgot to add that Frazier showed a pretty effective jab when he threw it.

I can’t see any of today’s giant heavies beating him despite the size difference. The gap in skill and STAMINA would be too much for any of the likes of Fury, AJ, and Wilder.

It's funny, but when the fight started, I was watching it thinking "yeah I can see why Frazier tends to be dismissed a lot now, he looks small, herky jerky and sort of crap". However, as the fight goes on and he gets into his rhythm, you actually hear those hooks landing with a "thwack" and start to notice that he throws them continuously, with full power and never seems to tire.

Unlike with most fighters, when he has Ellis hurt, you know there is no way he's gonna let him survive because Joe is relentless and that haymaker hook is coming all night as he doesn't seem capable of punching himself out.

I think that most fans who dismiss him nowadays aren't really the type who like to watch boxing matches all the way through and just prefer to go to the Youtube highlight segments of fights and build up their "knowledge" that way. Frazier's grinding, remorseless style doesn't suit that sort of "cliffnotes" analysis which is why, I think, he's increasingly overlooked. Hell, there's only been 1,300 views of this video and it's been up over three years.

Adding to Cdogg's observation, it's nice to see Dundee protecting his fighter, rather than sending him out and prolonging the beating like most corners would have done.

Also Frazier suffers from a huge amount of distortion... The Ali fights (in particular the third) have created the impression that Frazier was a poor defensive fighter among casuals (age and blindness aren't very helpful for defense against an exceptionally quick handed opponent) and the Foreman fight (the 1st, the second doesn't matter really as Joe was done though it's fun watching him box with surprising adroitness off the back foot) has created the impression that he was helpless but insanely courageous ...

The reality is that no one punished Ali worse than Joe Frazier. Joe Frazier dished out more hurt on the greatest heavyweight of all time than anyone else. And George Foreman, a completely unique fighter with no real close equivalent may as well have been designed in a lab for the sole purpose of stopping Joe Frazier (plus Frazier hadn't had a real opponent since Ali and had been strangely inactive for the time period... there was speculation that Yank Durham thought his guy had peaked and was fading... I've always thought it was Durham trying to hide the bad eye and protect Frazier... remember the blind eye wasn't known about in the press until years later)

I'm digressing crazily here... point is Frazier was fucking terrific from 1966 to 1971 and damned good even after George nearly killed him

I think he gets dismissed mainly due to the KO loss to Foreman. However, young George would have done the same to many heavyweights. Norton was an excellent fighter in his own right. He stood no chance against George.

That's always been my take as well... those fights are exclamation points supporting the greatness of George Foreman rather than black marks on Frazier or Norton

And don’t forget that Norton as well took Ali to hell and back. Broke his jaw, even. It was because of Ali’s tough give and take fights with Norton and Frazier that it was believed he stood virtually no chance against Foreman.

Frazier's head movement was clearly an inspiration for Tyson.
