What am I emo about? Tito wasn’t my favorite fighter when he was active. He wasn’t even my favorite welterweight.
Ike could win but I don’t trust Quartey’s chin or stamina. Ike’s chin was actually really solid considering he like to be right in front of guys and catch so many shots with his gloves and he was usually hurt late in fights where he’d either been busy or burned up lots of nervous energy. But it’s too easy to see him getting rocked and jumped on. His jab would be a problem but the jab was better used by more mobile guys against Tito to control him and make him react. If you try to stay more in the pocket and punish him with it he’ll counter it eventually. He’d have to really bust Tito up in the first half of the fight to be in a good position down the stretch and he still might get caught trying to finish Tito off.
No. That is what I always believed would have occurred if they fought when they were scheduled to fight
Could Tito have beaten Jose Luis Lopéz, surely the most dangerous yet lazy /wasteful welterweight of the 90s?
Lopez would have a punchers chance but he’d most likely have to do it with one shot. Mostly like Tito moves around a bit early, whirls Lopez head around a few times and Lopez just kind of stands there scared and stoned and gets his ass kicked.
I think Quartey was made for Trinidad. Stiff, robotic, available to be hit, and not exactly iron chinned nor did he exactly have a marathon runners stamina. I think Tito would have stopped Quartey in the late rounds.
Quartey could be methodical but his athleticism and improvisation could be a problem. He could make himself seem a predictable jabbing, plodding target and then pull counter right hands or feint and drop a hook.
Quartey had a habit of winging his right hand too which makes him WIDE OPEN to the counter left hook. It nearly got him stopped against Oscar and I think would have cost him dearly with Trinidad.
He Could've Dealt w/Trinidad's Defense SOMEWHAT if Not for THE Dumbest "Gameplan" in Boxing History... Joppy was NEVER a "Physical" Fighter to Begin w/yet Spoke Openly of Imposing SIZE on Trinidad...Had he Fought as he Customarily Did, Trinidad Stops him Late or Wins a UD... There was NATHAN @ All Special about Joppy, but he Didn't Altogether Suck Either...He Wasn't as SHIT as Trinidad Made him Look... REED
He fought his customary fight, that was the problem. He was all about imposing a workrate on his opponent that he was comfortable with and they weren’t. He wasn’t a great technical boxer or that fast but he was savvy and scrappy. That’s a bad style against a lethal puncher like Tito. You can see in that legendary round that Joppy won what he was trying to do and how Trinidad was getting a little flustered by his work rate. A bum like Lemoo wouldn’t have any answer but to wing shots and hope to catch him and Joppy had a decent chin and resilience. I’d take Joppy over guys like Lemoo, Murray, Stevens, Echols, Allen, Geale, etc
The first left hook that started Joppy's downfall, Joppy actually lowers both his hands to his waist and boom, it lands. He looked like a guy who just wanted to hasten the execution, and then, once it started, he fought desperately to delay it. Very odd gameplan not helped by an utterly useless corner who told him that it was "Time to get tough, now" as he got his head kicked in.
He tried to roll with a punch like he’d done thousands of time before but it got there quicker than he thought it would. The little risks and tricks he depended on weren’t going to work against a puncher that sharp and dangerous for long.
