Many many many more people love Rocky than Taxi Driver. Rocky was an inspiration. I never even watched Taxi Driver. And I never even heard of Network.

Rocky IV is legendary for its plot holes, but IMO Rocky III is underrated in that sense.

The wrestling match for starters. Rocky believes that wrestling is fake, but he finds out, as does the viewer, that it is for real. The Thunderlip guy is actually trying to break his back. In this charity event, the police tries to stop Thunderlip, who proceeds to bash their teeth out. However, there are no consequences for his actions, instead, Rocky smiles peacefully with him right after the bout.

Rocky's blind eye from Rocky II is completely forgotten, but since he trains bit poorly, he gets steamrolled by a bigger stronger guy. Luckily enough, he runs into the master coach and strategist Apollo Creed, who makes him lose 15 lbs of weight and turns him into a Muhammad Ali whose running speed increases miraculously over one training camp.

After watching tapes of Clubber Lang, the master strategist Apollo decides that since Clubber is so strong, they have to knock him out early (why, of course). The heavily-muscled guy who has walked right through Rocky in the first encounter, must be defeated inside the first rounds, not by any means try to wear him out for ten, even though your whole training is based on conditioning and movement. Luckily though, the third round lasts for over ten minutes and Balboa indeed does wear Clubber out early in the fight.

After the fight, the master trainer and strategist Apollo rewards his fighter by challenging him to a fight

Stallone has a couple of classics like Rambo and Rocky...but once you remove those two movies he gets beat by guys like Statham
i'd much rather watch a generic Statham movie tonight than a generic Stallone movie

Punch stats from the first round of Rocky Balboa vs Clubber Lang II

    Balboa 76 out of 79
    Lang 1 out of 16

The round lasted bit over 90 seconds, couple of Balboa's shots were not shown but judging from the car-door slamming sounds they probably landed.

Harold how do you have it scored thus far?

The amazing thing about Rocky III is the audience roots for the complacent, millionaire champion over the hungry and determined challenger.

I wonder if they got that Rocky blind eye thing from Sugar Ray Leonard’s brief first retirement due to his detached retina. I think they both happened around the same time.

Also, isn’t “go for it” the lamest line to use when somebody threatens to kick your ass? It was lame when Rocky said it to Lang and it was twice as lame when Rocky jr said it to the school yard bully. It’s too bad Rocky didn’t say it when Drago threatened to break him because it would have been straight up funny in that moment.

The line foreshadowed his strategy of allowing Mr. T to beat him mercilessly for 8 rounds

It was only for two rounds, since it was vital to knock Lang out early because he was so strong

Exactly. Whenever I’m flipping through movie channels and I run across any movie headlined by Statham, I immediately keep on flipping. And I actually like Statham, I just don’t like any of his movies, and anyone who would say Statham is better than Stallone is either a retard from England, a Stallone hater or a plain ol retard.

The day Statham headlines a movie that has long term replay value will be the first time.

Snatch is arguably way better than those 2 combined

i'm no Statham fan, he was the first action star that poped into my head...but take out a couple movies from Stallone's resume and he's worse than average action guys

I don’t think it’s fair to compare the action star resume of an 80’s guy like Stallone to the action star resume of guys like The Rock who gets put into big budget action films. In the beginning guys like Stallone and Ahnold basically had to turn B movies into blockbusters and the only thing that separated them from today’s B movie stars was the fact they had A list charisma.

The Rock and Statham have charisma but they don’t have to carry films on that the way Arnold, Willis and Sly did. Any B movie actor can mowe down villans with a machine gun while spitting out one liners but it takes a certain charisma to turn that into big box office dollars.

Stallone's movies were not, "big budget?"

If Stallone's 80's action movies were not big budget, which 80's action movies were?

Are you suggesting Stallone was not in the same league as the Rock?

    Agree

    It's a ridiculous post

Stallone parlayed a double fucking Oscar win in 1976 (the only other two guys to win two for the same film are Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles, two of the great artists of film ever) into a long career of hack work. He had all the budget he wanted and made mostly garbage with it... he turned A-budgets into B-movies, not the other way around... he was a far bigger star than The Rock who is arguably still more famous for pro wrestling than movies

That was exactly my point. I wasn’t saying Stallone’s films didn’t have a big budget I was more referring to the big budget spectacle that has to accompany action stars like The Rock who is either battling giant monsters, earthquakes, or burning buildings. Other than the occasional helicopter crash or explosions, 80’s action movies mostly centered on the hero pretty much just shooting people with guns. Today’s stars just don’t have the charisma to pull that kind of regular action film off now.

So yes Stallone turned A budgets into B movies but he still made A dollars at the box office which was my point. You swap The Rock or Statham or any of these boring actors of today into one of Stallone’s films and it would absolutely flop.

Anyone who thinks this franchise is any good beyond Rocky II or at a push, Rocky III, is a fucking mook who probably knows nothing about proper movies and even less about boxing and so they, and their entire family, friends and colleagues need a one-way trip into a disused communal shower with a small opening at the top enabling Zyklon-B to be pumped through....

I always wanted to punch Stallone for dumping his first wife, Sasha Czack (the mother of his first two children and the one that was with him during poverty and tough times) a good woman that he traded for that gold digger, Brigitte Nielsen, who ended up cheating on him and their marriage lasted less than a year.

    Sasha Czack in her prime
