On December 25th will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the very first Star Trek movie after ten years of hiatus since the tv series was cancelled by NBC. The video below gives a good briefing on the chaotic transition from tv to the big screen, the troubled production and how this production almost killed the franchise upon arrival. While the film itself was a mess, very slow and the less 'Trek' of them all, it still achieved a sense of discovery, optimism and a potential of greater things ahead.

Can't say I ever really liked this movie - either when I first saw it in '79 or any subsequent viewing since.

Visually ahead of anything else then, though....and wasn't it supposed to be the most expensive movie ever made at the time?

"The womens' mini-skirts were now gone...because they wete considered sexist"

    Fuck off, 'sexist'.
    In 1979?
    Bullshit.

No, the guy is right. I still keep the Starlog magazines from when they were filming the movie and the article stated they wanted all the cast to have the same kind of unisex uniform and that the mini-skirts were not only too 60s, but too eye candy for males as it would offend feminists. They were heavily influenced by the 70's ERA movement and Gene Roddenberry was trying to send a feminist statement.

Yup, those pajamas-looking uniform with bland colors were terrible.
