I was watching the Pan-Ams on FSN today and Guillermo Rigondeaux failed to show up for his quarter final bout in Brazil!!

For those that don't follow Rigondeaux's career, he's is universally considered the best amateur batamweight in the world bar none. He won gold in Sydney and Athens. He won gold in the World Boxing Ams in China too and would probably have won Gold at the Pan-Ams this year.

I don't know how much time he has left to develop into a pro being 26 but he could make a splash at 118 or 122.

Good, I hope he goes pro as he'd be a waste of good talent otherwise

It was unreal. I heard that Cubans defect commonly at Amateur competitions but literally Rigondeaux's opponent was waiting ring side while the officials were trying to find him.

First time I've seen this on TV.

maybe 2 years but he doesn't need it... that Gamboa dude who's fighting for a german promotion right now came from the amateurs and i think he would be competitive on world championship level right now - same goes for Odlanier Solis if he loses some pounds.

A cuban top rank amateur at 26 is about as polished as u can get it... You should try to find the cuban thread by Elterrible he posted a video of gamboa these guys don't need develepment...:eek:

Gamboa was possibly the best ammy prospect of the past decade, IMO.

Well I don't mean they need more seasoning in terms of their skills but they will need time to adjust to the pro rules. No headgear, the gloves, going 10-12 rounds, etc.

You loved this guy back in 2000.

Fightnews claims his record as an amateur is 244-4. That's the greatest record I've heard of or remember.

    For comparison:

    Savon: 362-21
    DLH: 223-5
    Teofilo: 302-22
    Papp: 288-12
    Tszyu: 259-11
    Casamayor: 333-30
    Whitaker: 201-14
    Breland: 110-1
    Leonard: 165-5
    Davis Jr: ? (edit: 125-5)
    Kovacs: 282-14-1

If I remember correctly this guy is a really smooth southpaw w/ some pop who likes to box flatfooted and has great timing and accuracy.

Speaking of the Pan Am games...I've been watching the boxing and I could have sworn I saw Gerald Tucker as a past champion. Is that the same guy who posts here?

winky didnt have too many amateur fights, but didnt he only lose like 2 times?

I think harry simon had 50 fights and zero losses as an amateur.

    rigondeaux has a great record.

Wiki says 2003 finals. Rigondeaux won the 2003 Pan Am games:

"Guillermo Rigondeaux Ortiz (born September 30, 1980 in La Prueba) is a Cuban boxer, who competed in the bantamweight (54 kg) division at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics and won the gold medal on both occasions. He is also World Champion from 2001. His rival is Aghasi Mammadov, but Rigondeaux has won all bouts except for the final of the 2003 World Championships. He has recently won gold at the 2005 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Mianyang, China."

well maybe it was the w.c's someone was telling me he got upset in. anyhow I'd like to see the fight he lost. rigondeaux leaving is great for boxing because the timing is right. another olympics and I think he'd turn into more of a slapper like kindelan. he was already regressing in the last olympics. this guy can crack though

Abdullaev---- 288 - 8,..greatest ever amatuer, but that's where he left his prime sadly, although as a pro-prospect he was spectacular for a little while, but then frizzled out quickly.

What happened to Abdullaev anyway, Kauki? I remember you sucked his balls even harder then you now do Margarito's.......I think you predicted Abdul would destroy Cotto,no ? How did that one go?

Tucker won in 1999 beating the Cuban, Waldemar Font, and then winning against some Venezuelan for the Gold. He's a fairly decorated amateur. I don't understand why people clown on him so much (like miKE) for instance, but whatever.

    go fuckyourself.

I like Tucker just fine. I gave him shit about thinking he'd get a huge signing bonus in his current situation. That's not clowning. But, as I said back then, more power to him if he lucks out and finds someone willing to pay him that kind of money. Now, I get a legitimate kick out of the guy and hope he does well.

Find where I've said otherwise. Good luck.

:eeeek: Why Dympeople,..do you really wan't to know?,..ok, I shall tell you everything, and more importantly, CONFESS EVERYTHING...so here goes,....

I predicted as you've correctly pointed out, that Abdullaev, would slaughter Cotto in a matter of seconds, as easy as chopping a head off a chicken I said, I wagged my chin, and loudmouthed that Cotto had no chance, that he would DIE promptly, and everybody laughed at me and thought I was a fuckwit,..to me, Miguel Cotto was just a weak hispanic Puerto Rican, and I considered them primitive scum of the earth, stupid animals, mere primate oddities, thier only use in life was for us civillised white boys to beat them down and rob them of thier valuables in alleyways,...I thought, YES!, this bout, is symbolic of white-power,..and representational proof, of my own physical and mental superiority over Puerto Rico as a whole, and for that matter, the entire hispanic race!!!....:crafty: hoo hooo hooo heee heee heee harr harr HARRR!!!..

............But as the rounds progressed,....I could feel the blood pressure thumping in my throat, and I lapsed into garish screams of disbelief, I screamed my guts up,..screamed HARDER,...and HARDER,..., until Abdullaev became so vunerable by the pain and fear, that he fell to Cotto's knees and sobbed for his life.

It was at this precise moment Dympeople, that a powerful electric whisp cracked my heart and sent me into a hysterical fit. I threw myself against the wall helplessly and slid lifelessly to the ground. I began banging my head against the floor trying to break my skull, there was no reason to live, I wept for 6 straight hours, moaning in pain Dympeople,..MOANING like a 'cow' giving birth to a calf, the pain was too excrutiating to bare,..
As the days passed and the tears flowed, the emptiness in my heart began to drive me crazy,..so I DESPERATELY scrounged through everything really, prying through magazines and browsing the internet, my teeth were clenched and I kept hissing with frustration, I frantically looked for the next best equivalent,.."My soul for a hot white prospect!" I screamed,...
..................but there was none Dympeople, no fighter of that description ever came,..

I still cry about it sometimes,.....but it serves me right,..it serves me right ..you know why???.......because I only loved Abdullaev because he was white, I didn't give a fuck about his fighting style, or his behaviour outside of the ring, to me, it was all about his race, and his undefeated record.

That's exactly why I began to support Margarito,..as a kind've grovelling 'reconciliation tribute to my hispanic masters, just the way Abdullaev did,...

White people are kidding themselves if they don't believe what you and I say about them being inferior quitters Dympeople, the sooner these few remaining suspect caucasian messageboarders realise that they just can't shake off thier soft genetical make-up and compete with thier superiors, the better they shall be, it's purifying to the soul I say, let's be true to ourselves.. =) and you don't have to worry about me anymore Dympeople, I'm reformed,..yes sir,..and although Orthadox Cruisader can be a frustrating pain in the arse and agonisingly stubborn I notice, that's really alright,..:dunno: ..I mean think about it, what would there be left for you to do if there wasn't a need to ridicule white fighters all the time?..

    :crafty:
