Disney executives are just showering in champagne right now celebrating all the victories they have achieved so far this year and particularly these past few days. And why not, the studio has broken its own record of higher grosses ever than any other single studio which is an amazing feat. Just recently they saw Avengers: Endgame finally unseat 'Avatar' as the highest grossing movie of all time worldwide. Then Marvel soared again with Spider-Man: Far From Home crossing the $1 billion mark, the first Spidey film to accomplish that shattering number. It stands as Marvel's Cinematic Universe ninth film to reach the billion dollar club. While the film is distributed by Sony, Marvel is taking all the credit. Aladdin live-action remake just crossed the $1 billion mark too. And then they have The Lion King remake which in 10 days has grossed $962.6 million. The film took again the #1 spot domestically with $75 million and $114 million internationally just this weekend, so it will pass the $1 billion easily before Friday.

In a distant second place Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood snatched $40.3 million making it the best debut for Tarantino since 'Inglorious Basterds' opened in 2009 with $38 million.

In its fourth week of release 'Spider-Man: Far from Home' landed in the third place with $12.2 million. Domestically it has grossed $345 million which is still a third place in the character's franchise. the first 'Spider-Man' (2002) still hods the best domestic numbers with $403 million. Overseas the current film is doing much better with close to $700 million.

Toy Story 4 is holding onto the fourth spot with $9.8 million. While the Pixar film is inching close to $400 million domestically it will fail to reach the $1 billion mark the previous film passed. However $917 million is no small change, so don't feel sad for Disney/Pixar.

Finally in the fifth spot Crawl took a $4 million bite in its third week of release. The thriller from Paramount has now amassed $35 million domestically versus its $13 million budget.

Is official: The Lion King just surpassed the $1 billion mark worldwide making it the fourth Disney film this year to accomplish this feat.

I went one rainy hungover sunday. Largely pointless, as expected. Some bits were visually cool but without the anthropomorphism of the cartoon format the songs came off as absurd and the emotional scenes fell totally flat

    Jungle book was much better
