I once made a hypothetical argument in favor of Chavez when this section of the forum tended to have longer posts. Duran is simply the better fighter and more versatile. He wins.
Duran vía competitive but decisive UD. Just a better fighter all around but he would be have his hands full with Chavez who was not without skill his own self.
Once and for all? Yeah right. I actually do not recall much dispute over this one. Doesn't pretty much everyone pick Duran?
Roberto Duran was the best lightweight ever. Period. A fight with Chavez would have been epic, but I do see Duran scoring a late TKO on cuts.
People tend to forget that Duran had mad boxing skills. He would have been too much for Sweet Pea. I don't see Whitaker being able to listen to the final bell TBH.
The notion of Duran being in deep against guys like Pea and Taylor is laughable. Duran would retire Taylor in about 8 rounds and there'd be NO rematch or debate.
Whitaker absolutely beats Duran... frustrate the hell out of him and pay him back for every nutshot and headbutt
w/Out Trying to Re-Open Old Wounds or Re-Hash DECADES Old Debates, You CAN'T Watch Leonard-Duran II and Completely RULE OUT Whittaker's Chances of Beating Duran @ '35... REED
Duran would be little more than Manos de Mierda in this bout Within a week of his humiliation, he'd open up a doomed business in a seedy section of Vegas called "Roberto's Robot Repair"
I can see Duran struggling with legendary Mexican slickster Jose Luis Ramirez alright. That's why I never rated Duran, he never lost to these Men of Molasses.
Uuuuuh, Whittaker was Almost Always the SHORTER Man in the Ring...Like it Mattered... And While they "Moved" Differently, Whittaker Certainly Did So AS Effectively as Leonard, if Not More Effectively... Whittaker was HARDER to Hit than Leonard Ever was, He was a SOUTHPAW, Had an EXCELLENT Right Jab and Despite the KO% Let's NOT Pretend Guys Played him Cheap Either...Pernell's Left Cross TAMED More Than its Fair Share of So-Called "Pressure" Fighters Over the Years, at Various Weights... Pernell Would've Been Among THE Quicker Handed Fighters Duran Ever Fought w/Perhaps THE Highest Ring IQ Duran Ever Encountered... If Esteban DeJesus Could Beat Roberto Duran, Pernell Whittaker Certainly Could...And if Ray Leonard Could MINDFUCK Duran Into QUITTING in the Middle of the Ring, Pernell Could Certainly FRUSTRATE and Cause Lapses in Focus in Duran... REED
This is an Example of Boxrec GONE BAD... Whittaker-Ramirez I was Probably THE Worst Decision of the 1980's... REED
Whitaker is shorter than SRL. You pointed to SRL's success in the second fight as evidence that Whitaker too could have success. And yet, the only thing those two have in common is they are: both black, both Olympians, and both love yayo. But they do not fight the same way. Not even close. So if you think Whitaker beats Duran, you'll have to do better than: if SRL can do it, so can Whitaker.
I think Duran beats up a lot of guys that Whittaker struggled with. Hurtado? Come on man. Duran went to 168.
Have You SEEN Leonard-Duran II???... Are You HONESTLY Telling REED the MANNER in Which Leonard Fought in Duran II Completely ESCAPES Pernell Whittaker's Capabilities???... Leonard Jabbed, Moved, Refused to Engage When Duran Wanted to Engage, Got Off Quick Handed Flashy Flurries and CLOWNED Him Sooooo Bad w/Showboating Tactics that the Audience was Noticeably LAUGHING @ Duran...Instead of Trying to Match Machismo, Which Cost him the 1st Fight, Leonard FINESSED the Shit Out of Duran in the RE... YOU'LL Have to Do Better Doub, Because REED's Addressing the Actual FIGHT...Nice Try Though... To Think Pernell COULDN'T Glean and Use Facets of Leonard's Approach in Duran II REALLY Illustrates How Fucking LITTLE You Know... REED
Yes. I have watched it. And despite what people like you say, it was actually a very close fight when Duran quit. So it's not like srl lay some kind of blueprint. But regardless, srl used Aliesque footwork to circle Duran and hit him from distance. Whitaker is not doing that. So fuck off.
