It escaped the China censors, but the film has flopped there...playing in almost empty theaters in some places.

wow im shocked they let it through. Well the audience is censoring it themselves then by not going.

The prior film did poorly in China, so this isn't surprising. Just recently the China censorship has been more lenient with LGBTQ themes as long as they are tame. From what I read the particular scene in this film was more head scratching than shocking since it involves irrelevant background characters.

I think it’s mostly millennials who tend to like these latest SW films. They didn’t grow up like us and are more inclined to group think and don’t know a good movie from a bad one. They’re also the idiots who go on IMDB and give 1/10 for movies they dislike and 10/10 for movies they do. It’s why movie ratings mean shit-all this days. I find it’s better to skim through and find a review that reads like the person who wrote it was intelligent and had a nuanced thinking capacity.

It wasn't as bad as The Last Jedi but it was dumb as fuck. It finished off the work of Rian Johnson by completely ruining the entire franchise.

Is it true that Rose Tico was left behind doing some sort of research as an excuse to get her out of the main plot with just a small cameo screen time? I applaud Jar Jar Abrams for THAT!

'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' took the expected top spot at the box office this weekend with $175.5 million which is lower than the industry predictions of $190-$210 million. If the second week sees a dramatic drop of 60% or more this could be very bad news for Disney. The production itself is rumored to have cost over $300 million sans the marketing budget which has been insane over saturation so far and could easily top another $100 million. So to break even and make profit this film needs to gross close to $1 billion. This opening, while solid, isn't exactly very promising. The film which opened internationally almost everywhere (except Vietnam, Phillipines and Korea) brought $198 million revenue for a worldwide total of $373.5 million which is one of the lowest openings for the Star Wars saga.

Bombing spectacularly is Cats which grossed an anemic $6.5 million. This took no one by surprise.

Also bombing in its wide release is the Fox News Hollywood political hit job Bombshell which was anything but a bombshell with its weak $5.4 million debut. The star studded media critics darling will end up losing money, but probably everybody involved knew that beforehand.

I have been listening to a long podcast and reading some info that explains how Disney screwed big time J.J. Abrams during the filming of this movie. Abrams is apparently as pissed with the final product as were the fans. These are some of the leaked info from the same Lucasfilm source who revealed all the plot points months ago which turned out to be true, so I believe these are too:

    • J.J. Abrams was persuaded by Disney's CEO, Bob Iger to direct Episode XI. Kathleen Kennedy didn't want Abrams, but Rian Johnson. J.J. agreed to direct with the condition that he will have a bigger creative hand than he had with The Force Awakens.
    • Just a couple of weeks into production, Disney and more specifically Kennedy began to demand changes and made shooting difficult for Abrams, cast & crew.
    • The idea of bringing back Emperor Palpatine was solely Kathleen Kennedy's to Abrams protests.
    • Abrams wanted to film two movies to properly finish the story. Disney didn't want none of it and asked for rewrites.
    • J.J. Abrams wanted to deliver an epic, fan friendly satisfying ending that honored Luke & Leia. Kathleen Kennedy & her female minions totally sabotaged that.
    • J.J. Abrams has always being known as a very friendly and courteous person with everybody, but apparently he was losing it during his meetings with the studio suits and Kennedy and was heard shouting, "Why the hell don't you just put in the credits written and directed by Lucasfilm?"
    • To his horror J.J. Abrams saw how scenes he shot were being edited, added voices, special effects or sounds he never agreed with.
    • Disney demanded particular scenes to be added to sell toys.
    • Abrams cut was a little over three hours long. Disney chopped it down to 2:22 to get more screen viewing times.
    • Recently during an interview Abrams was told that many fans were disappointed with the final film, to which he responded that they have the right to feel like that...hinting that he too was not happy with the film.
    • The principal actors have been also hinting at their displeasure with the film. Mostly John Boyega who has been throwing sarcastic bombs at the film's Reylo fans.

Movies made by committee and studio meddling kills franchise.

    Colour me surprised.

Well it looks like The Rise of Soywalker is now struggling to even match 'Rogue One' numbers. It will definitely NOT match that film's domestic numbers and it will barely might or might not match 'Rogue One' global box office total. Keep in mind that 'Rogue One' cost over $100 million less than the current film and was just a stand alone film with no known characters except for the Vader & Talkin cameos. Rise of Soywalker should be doing 'Avengers: Endgame' like numbers, not struggling with non-saga one-shot film.

    Good job, Kathleen Kennedy!

Rogue One was unnecessary and not good. Only rated high because of nerds jerking it to a 2 min Vader scene at the end.

No. Rogue one was the best of the bunch. Nice battle scenes. Clear link to original trilogy. Good villain (the evil colonialist).

Really? I found none of the characters memorable at all. As for the link to the OT, it wasn’t a question worth answering IMO. To make the exhaust deliberate sabotage assumes they knew someone with the Force would shoot at it. It was too small for computers to target according to the first film.

Makes more sense that the designers of the thing made it that way rather than it being a deliberate flaw that no one could actually capitalize on.

Of all the Disney Star Wars productions only The Mandalorian and Rogue One can be called worthy Star Wars experiences. Rogue One is flawed, true, but it is head and shoulders better than the Rey Palpatine saga...and lets not even bother to mention that Solo aberration...

No you’re right the movie was pretty mediocre. I have no interest in ever seeing it again and the fact it’s been better than pretty much everything they’ve released this past decade says a lot about the quality of said stuff.

I disagree. I think the original Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi were all pretty good too, but that’s probably just me.

I also thought Solo was better than the Force Awakens.

Rogue One was okay, nothing special. Overrated as fuck. A movie based off of ONE LINE of dialogue.

In fairness to Panch, he did say the best of the Disney films. I think it’s taken as read that the OT are the best films.

As for the Disney films, they straight up wasted an interesting story in Boyega’s character. A stormtrooper that turns would make for a decent story. Pity they did nothing with it.

Where was I comparing it to the classic Original Trilogy? I said it is way much better as a Star Wars film than the current Disney Rey Mary Sue Palpatine trilogy.

And you are alone in your opinion about Solo.:No2:

And Boyega has been trolling and mocking the current film now that he is free from a Disney contract. He wasn't happy at all how he was relegated to practically the token black in this last film.

That was just me trying to be a smartass but instead came out looking like a dumbass lol.

But I stand by my Solo critique even if I am alone on it.

Yeah all of the new Star Wars films are pretty lousy and I have no doubt they made it worse shoehorning in "woke" shit. I fell asleep through the couple i tried watching so i couldn't even give an honest full review.

No matter how bad or disappointing they've been however let's not forget the prequels sucked as well. It's not like it went from Lucas to Disney and then tanked. Fans of the first trilogy have to accept the franchise is dead. I have a box set of the originals on Blu Ray that i watch from time to time and i'm happy with that.

Revenge of the sith is one of the greatest Star Wars movies ever. Probably third best.
