Mike is easily one of the most famous athletes in history - even 15 years post-career hes still a rockstar.

Where does he rank purely in terms of fame as far as athletes go?

World-wide and prime for prime he is right up there behind Ali among the very first. Tyson is in the level of Maradona, Jordan, Tiger Woods, Pele, Ali's closest rivals

Majority of millenials/internetees have brought him back. Majority were not around while he was an active fighter.

He's certainly right up there. Like Ugo I'd put him on the Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo, Stan Bowles level.

Do you think Cristiano has surpassed Maradona on a global-recognition/superstar level?

    Top 5 I’d say. Even today, he’s still a compelling character .

In the 80s, he had celebrity level fame simply because he was the heavyweight champion of the world who took boxing by storm, unlike Floyd who had to put on a WWF like schtick to compensate for his boring style of fighting, though effective.

Tyson also did have a certain charisma about him. Not quite Ali level, obviously. But he an authentic appeal.

For sure. CR like him or not, is that recognizable. He’s been a prodigy for the longest time and he has the perfect package of ability and marketability.

He’s up there with LeBron James and Lionel Messi in terms of world wide recognition.

No doubt. Don't get it twisted though, as great as CR7 undoubtedly is, Maradona is the greatest to ever kick a ball. Ronaldo, Messi, LeBron etc all have the benefit of coming to prominence in the digital age, in a world where media has never before been as globalised and accessible as it is now. One can only imagine how huge a figure someone like a prime Tyson or Maradona would be if they came through in this day and age.

I'd say he is up here too. Tyson, Pele, Maradona, The Ronaldos, Messi.........he's in that category for sure. I don't know if there is or isn't another category for others like Ali, Jordan, Kobe etc....it may differ from one part of the Globe to the next.

It sounds cruel, but Kobe's death probably elevated him to that level of fame.

Let's be honest, until last month, he wasn't as famous globally as Jordan.

I mean, even WITH Kobe's death, Mike remains the famous basketball who ever lived... by a lot.

And all things considered, I feel like Ali is globally the most famous and recognizable athlete of all time.

The night Kobe died I walked down to my local supermarket and there was this black guy that I had never seen in there before and he was walking around wearing a Kobe Lakers vest. I'd never seen him before and I've not seen him since. Nothing like a death to bring them out of the woodwork. Like that fucking retarded girl Diana Spencer...touch a cripple, say hi to a leper, die, and you're a star....not just a star, but a legend, approaching sainthood.

Of course Bryant was an actual talent, unlike Lady Blacked, but I digress.

From America's perspective, boxing and basketball are really the only two "big time" sports over here with GLOBALLY renowned stars.

Let's be honest, there's never been an American football player or baseball player that's been GLOBAL icon. An American icon maybe, but not on a global level.

Tiger Woods is an exception in golf.

So from America, you got: Tyson, Ali, Tiger, Jordan, Kobe, Lebron, Shaq.

I feel like those are the 7 most famous athletes globally from our country.

I feel like DiMaggio is maybe in there too as he was referenced so much and was a popular culture icon. I knew who he was as a kid even though I knew next to nothing about baseball.

Yeah a good shout as people don't go around saying things like "Where did you go, Jackie Robinson" or "Here's to you, Barry Bonds".

Lewis Hamilton should be up there but the whole "Today sex is dangerous and the racing is safe" thing has ruined that, it's all about what team you drive for, what techno they have, how much rubber there is on your tyres etc etc.

Schumachers era was infinitely more dangerous {thanks in part to him lol} .....you had that weekend Ratzenberger and Senna were killed within hours of each other.

    100% correct.

There is a new series on Netflix about the F1 season and it's all about the TEAMs....with the little kid-punk drivers who come along to race with their fucking Mums with them!!

Hamilton is an ATG, his dad took him racing and they legit came from very little, but it's all about teams now like cycling.

Cycling is fucked since decades and got away with it.

The cheating is legal in motorsports ["Nothing stock about a stock car"] but it's just as flagrant in cycling.

You can be the strongest fittest dude of all times and you ain' winning shit if you're in the wrong team.

Hamilton is the best ever imo and should already be level with Schumacher. I do agree it's more about the cars these days but he went head-to-head with Alonso in his rookie season in the same car and came out on top, has won races in shit cars, routinely outclasses team mates etc.

    He does.

I feel like Jordan and Shaq are the two most famous NBA players of all time.

Then one tier below them, Magic, Lebron, and Kobe.
