Scrubs with great names in their record

List some instances where a total scrub holds a victory over a great name. Usually the good fighter has been shot, injured or whatever, but it doesn't matter here.

Brian Yates, a guy with a 13-86 losing record who usually lost by KO, holds a win over Earnie Shavers for example

 

Tim Anderson, a guy Larry Holmes knocked out in the 1st in his first comeback bout, holds a win over Jimmy Young

 

Not sure if it counts if guys are totally shot and probably shouldn't, so i'll only give one example. Scott Walker - Alexis Arguello

 

It totally counts. This thread doesn't listen to excuses

 

Would be a lot of names then i think in my mind.

Going in the opposite direction shotness, there's the guy who beat Bernard Hopkins in his pro debut.

 

They are not that common if you are trying to find the crappiest of crap. Like Kevin McBride is way too good a fighter to list here

Technically you're asking for any or all, whether the reason is obvious or not. You've commented that most reasons are obvious but you don't restrict the discussion in any way.

 

But there are very few examples that would suit both threads.

It has to be, for me, Howard Clarke, currently rotting away in a mental health facility in the British midlands, his brain shot to utter toast, holding a points win over former US amateur star Jason Papillon.

Clarke finished with a careeer record of 27-79-2

Papillon finished with a record of 39-15-2

 

Tony Booth is a British journeyman who was the first guy to defeat Omar Sheika, who admittedly isn't a great fighter but was a decent contender.

While not a scrub, Richie Wenton wasn't much more than domestic level but was the first man to inflict defeat on Marc 'Too Sharp' Johnson, who was a great fighter.

 

Curtis “Hatchetman” Sheppard ... a big punching gatekeeper of the 1940s has a lot of losses to some fantastic fighters but he’s got some choice wins in there including a shocking 1st round KO of the normally iron-chinned Joey Maxim ... the only stoppage defeat of his long career ... of course, Maxim beat him a couple of weeks later ...

Teddy “Red Top” Davis has to be the best fighter ever to finish his career with a losing record ... his manager must’ve hated him

 

With different judges, Darnell Boone could have draws against ward and kovalev in addition to his win over stevenson. Thats pretty insane considering hes a scrub that couldnt beat total scrub walid smichet in two tries

 

Boone is, or at least was, definitely one of the best journeymen out there. Agreed that he could well have got a draw against Kovalev, but despite flooring Ward I thought he lost that pretty comfortably, no? I haven't seen it in a long time.

 

While some of those named are good, in sure
there has to be a more shocking example of a total scrub beating a great fighter

 

Cuevas has some early losses to guys that probably trained for no more than a few weeks.

Olivares lost his last fight to a guy who finished his career with a 3-4 record. That's pretty brutal

As for Cuevas, he was literally a kid and believe it or not, Boxrec is absolutely loaded with incomplete records especially in places like Mexico where record keeping was dodgy as fuck

There’s loads of fighters on there where like the first 15 opponents are all making their debut because Boxrec doesn’t have information for them ... nobody fights 15 0-0 guys in a row unless you’re a novelty act like Butterbean or something... Boxrec is easily missing thousands of fights because it’s hard to compile records when record keeping is poorly done

 

Example from the 70s:

Art Hafey fought a classic brawl with a guy named Rodolfo Moreno... according to Boxrec it was Moreno’s second Pro fight with his first coming three years earlier... it was a 10 rounder and Moreno was 23 years old ... unless you’re an Olympian, you don’t fight ten rounders against a world ranked contender in fight number two and you certainly don’t do that coming off of a three year layoff ... his record announced in the ring (I forget off hand) was like 25-2 or something... and he fought like it... guys with 27 fights have 10 round bouts ... and this is an American guy... Boxrec has his “debut” (assuming it even was his debut) and it’s got the KO loss to Hafey ... beyond that just a smattering of his remaining fights ... and this is a relatively recent professional fighter in America... extrapolate that to Mexico where record keeping was less rigorous and you see the problem... Boxrec is an ongoing project; all the time... I personally added records and info to that site many years ago... look up George Foster, a lightweight and former amateur of some note who lost to Esteban DeJesus... I myself contributed some of the information on his record
