Very shitty matchup. Sam Vargas is a step DOWN from Vergil's recent opponents.

I wish they could secure a fight with Lipinets - that's the right kind of test for Ortiz.

    Disappointing, But Not Surprising...

If Bud Crawford Can't Get QUALITY Welters Consistently, it Makes Sense Vergil Ortiz Can't Either...Not to Mention Jaron Ennis...They're All on the Outside Looking In, So to Speak...

Pertaining to Ortiz, Golden Boy's Gonna Have to OVERPAY for B/C Level Haymon Guys, Like Lipinets, Josesito Lopez, etc...

I am usually not in favor of a fighter switching trainers - particularly not from high level ones as the Diaz brothers - but in Vergil's case it appears to have worked. Been watching him since he was 13 and won the JO's here - a fine young man who comes from a good family. We are proud of him here n Texas.

From What REED Gathers, Spence Apparently Dismissed Vergil's "Challenge", Saying Words to the Effect Of, "Vergil was a Child When We Were in the Same Gym, I Remember Him Crying After Dallas GG Losses"...

More of a "Settle Down Son, We're Different Era's " Type of Thing Than an Outright DISS...

But REED Knows Spence is a Sensitive Subject to Those That Do or Did Train @ Vergil's Local Gym (Vivero's)...When Spence 1st Started Boxing, His Ol' Man Initially Took Him to the Gym Charles Hatley Trained @ (The Vast Majority of Dallas Boxing Peeps DON'T Even This), But Spence was an Afterthought to Them...Literally Wouldn't Give Him the Time of Day..."Go Over There and Hit the Bag" Type of Shit...

Vivero's was the 1st Gym Spence Made a HOME @, So to Speak, But In His Own Words, Vivero NEVER Went to National Tournaments w/Him, Showed Him a Southie 1-2 + a Hook & That Was It...Around the Same Time Spence was Starting to "Get" Boxing, Derrick James was Training @ Vivero's, Finishing Up his Pro Career...

Derrick Basically Payed his Gym Dues to Come Work Out, Spar and Do His Own Thing...Vivero Never Actually "Trained" him, Per Se...Spence's Ol' Man Saw Derrick, Liked What he Saw and Asked him to Train EJ...Simple As...

Nonetheless, In Dallas Boxing Circles, the Belief is Derrick James "Stole" Spence from Vivero's and/or EJ "Betrayed" the Gym, but Spence Sr. LITERALLY Made the Call Himself...REED Has Little Doubt Vergil Ortiz Has Grown Up Hearing How Disloyal Spence Was and Has Probably Loooooooooooooonged to Right That "Wrong" Against His Local Gym...

    Spence Knows it Too...

REED Wrote an Article Detailing This, Back When Spence was an Ammy…He'll Post it in a Sec...

Soooo, the Ol' North Texas Site REED Used to Write For Didn't Archive the Article, but REED Copied the Word Document...Sent it to the Local Site March 3rd 2010...

    Team Spence

As Errol Spence, Jr. entered the ring during the 2010 Dallas Golden Gloves, an almost tangible level of tension permeated the air at the Hella Shrine Temple. Unlike most other fighters in the tournament, Spence (known as "E.J." to friends) wasn't vociferously supported by the coaches, boxers and fans in attendance. In fact, the number one ranked 152 pound pugilist in the United States was met with lukewarm applause, each time his name was announced. Throughout the 2010 'Gloves, the big elephant in the room remained unspoken, yet ever present. The whispers, the suspicious glances, the breaks in mid-conservation as members of Team Spence strolled by. It wasn't a popular decision, but E. J. is no longer trained by Gene Vivero, one of the most tenured and respected coaches in Dallas/Ft. Worth.

After a brief beginning with the Hatley family at the Oak Cliff Boxing Club, Errol Spence, Sr. took his son to Vivero's Boxing Gym. By 2009, Spence Jr. was accumulating national titles with startling regularity. Runner-up at the 2008 National Golden Gloves, winner of the 2008 National P.A.L., 2009 National Golden Gloves champion and repeat winner of that year's National P.A.L. On the surface, you'd wonder why anybody would leave the gym and trainer they've been with, during such an impressive run.

But according to the Spence's, 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials finalist, Derrick James, has been in the picture all the while and played a major part in that success. "I told my wife 3 years ago about Derrick working with E.J.", Spence Sr. said. "I'm the one who approached Derrick. So if people think Derrick stole E.J. from somebody else, that's not true. I approached Derrick and it was my decision to change trainers." "E.J. won his first national tournament at the '08 PAL", Spence Sr. continued. "George Rincon worked the corner for that tournament, not Gene. And we had already been talking and working with Derrick even back then." The elder Spence and Vivero have had personality conflicts over the years and it all came to a head late in 2009. For better or worse, the bottom line is, Spence no longer works out of Vivero's and Derrick James is now officially his trainer.

Local fans got their first glimpse of Spence in the post-Vivero era at the 2010 Dallas Golden Gloves. In the championship bout, Spence punished his foe to the body, picked off any and all incoming shots with his gloves and high guard and planted hard left crosses to the grill throughout the first round. After a third 8-count, the massacre was mercifully stopped in the 2nd round. Spence's level of class was telling and he performed with assassin like precision. Ft. Worth will get its' first taste of Spence's 2010 vintage at this year's Texas State Golden Gloves, which begins tonight.

"Everybody is telling him how good he looked, but as his trainer, I'm looking for the flaws", James said. I'm getting E.J. to not focus on his left as much. You have two hands so use them." James was 21-7-1 with 12 KO's as a pro and fought for the NABF middleweight, WBC Continental America's super middleweight, the NABA light heavyweight and the NABF light heavyweight championships in his career (not to mention over 400 amateur fights). He's willing to help anybody and feels that his vast experience gives him a decided edge over most trainers. "Boxing is a hands on sport. How can you teach somebody to do something you've never done? He can't tell you how to react. When E.J. has a fight coming up, I'm right there with him working out. We run, we ride bikes, during the summer we swim and I even get in there and spar with him, sometimes. I'm trying to give him a more complete style. Counterpunching, angles, using distance and range to his advantage, being more focused and fighting smarter."

The laid back Spence, Jr. added, "Before, all I learned was a 1-2 and a hook to the head. But now, Derrick is improving my footwork, my head movement, my defense and my patience. I'm trying to get to the 2012 Olympics and I didn't feel I was being taught enough or growing fast enough as a fighter." For what it's worth, Vivero didn't seem to be bent out of shape about Spence's departure and posed a question of his own, when asked for a comment. "What national champion has Derrick started from scratch?" People on the Vivero side of the equation also likened the recent change in trainers to getting a go-cart racer to drive in the Indianapolis 500.

Ultimately, Spence's success will determine if the move was a wise one. No fighter is perfect, but Spence was already the top dog in America, so even the slightest hiccup will look like a setback. He isn't as vocal as his father or new trainer, but in his own way, E.J. is supremely confident that his dominant reign will continue.

In Amateur Boxing You Can't Fight in What's Called the "Open" Division Until You're Like 15-16 Years of Age...Vergil Ortiz is 8 Years YOUNGER Than Spence and was LITERALLY in Elementary School When Spence Was Earning his Stripes, Training @ the Same Gym...

    Do the Fucking Math...

I remember Derrick James as a boxer. He had the misfortune to run into a snarling Beast of a light heavyweight the late Chris Henry on a Thursday night at the Crowne Plaza across the street from NRG. When I think of a wasted career worth potential millions - Henry is the first name that comes to mind. He had a dispute with his manager, lost it and that was that. He beat the hell out of a guy on the street, the guy came back with two associates and Chris flattened all three of them, then the guy walked up behind him a few nights later and shot him in the back of the head in a convenience store parking lot. Tragic waste of a special kind of slugging talent.

Derrick Had the Misfortune of Running Into Chris Byrd as an Amateur...Made it to the '92 Olympic Western Trials, But Advanced No Fuuuuurther Than That...

Didn't See the Chris Henry Fight, But Heard from Hatley's Father (Who Worked Derrick's Corner That Night) It was Completely 1-Sided...

Sad What Eventually Happened to Henry, Who was Actually a COOL Dude, Despite How Hard and Aggressively He Fought...He Dabbled in Drugs Too, Huh???...

That was an unsubstantiated allegation and he was not found guilty of any drug offenses ever. Don't believe everything you read typed on the internet is my advice to you. H never failed a drug test. He was murdered by a coward shot in the back of the head he had beaten the holy shit out of.

Nope and that was a very long time ago. When people are intoxicated they will say anything, type anything and threaten to kill everyone in sight particularly when women are involved. They all woke up in a jail cell.

I don't know of many 60 year old men involved in street fighting. The do what I do - carry a large canister of Bear Spray with them. You'll wish you were dead after being hit in the eyes with that.

    Let it it go, OK?
You and everyone else had ample opportunity to confront him including one asshole here who said he was going to kick his ass - yeah, right the guy wouldn't even fight me.
He's been dead for five years now so let it remain in the past.
