Ok, since the world is waiting for Tyson vs Jones, maybe a little bit of superhero silliness fits in here. Rank the following in order of who beats whom: Spider Rico, Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago, Tommy Gunn, Union Cane, Mason Dixon. There's also baby Creed, baby Drago etc but we all know new hippity-hoppers are worse than their predecessors
Creed was an old, retired man when Drago killed him. I think a prime Creed beats both Drago and Lang. Lang vs Drago is obviously the most compelling matchup here, but I think Lang was just better. Both were bullies, but I think Dragon was more mentally fragile. Lang by KO. Gunn's chin would fail, just like the real fighter. And fuck Tarver!
Agreed with you guys. 1. Creed Many forget that Creed was knocked down with one punch against Balboa in the first round of their first encounter. He would have lost by KD had Rocky gone to neutral corner. After that, he clearly outboxed Balboa twice. 2. Lang Scored a genuine quick KO against Balboa who couldn't avoid his shots but in the rematch Lang got exhausted after two rounds. No way could he beat Creed. 3. Drago His development as a fighter was impressive: against Creed he threw zero jabs but in the Rocky fight (his first pro bout) had developed a spear of a jab. However, his power was a myth. He landed 50+ clean shots at shot Creed before flooring him. He bounced Balboa too, but the guy was glass-chinned. 4. Gunn A carbon copy of a past prime Rocky with zero good wins. 5. Dixon Barely got by 60+ Balboa. Also, a modern guy and crap by default 6. Rico Dominated the first round against young Balboa. Lost in the second only after brutal fouls 7. Cane Paper titlist
When I was a kid I thought Carl Weathers was the most jacked dude of all time. Then I saw Dolph Lundgren. Then I saw Lennox Lewis. I expect that in the world of Jackededness that the bar gets raised, no pun intended, every 5 years now.
#1 is Apollo Creed. He was 47-1. No one went the full distance with him besides Rocky. His only loss was when he got too aggressive and went for the knockout in the last round when he was winning. Like Meldrick Taylor being too aggressive in the 12th with JC Chavez. 237 lb Clubber Lang got outboxed on the outside by a 191 lb Rocky Balboa. That’s like Riddick Bowe being outmanned and outmoved by Rocky Marciano. But he cleaned out the division before that, like Sonny Liston before beating Floyd Patterson, so he is #2. He is also the best villain of all the flicks. Ivan Drago is 3. He actually beat nobody in the pros that we see, he killed an old Creed in the exhibition, but he beats up Rocky for 14 rounds until he also goes for the KO in the last round and loses. In his pro debut he beat up the HW champ for 14 rounds so he must have been really good. Tommy Gunn rose to the top of the division in short time and beat paper titlist Union ‘Chandelier Jaw’ Cane. Mason Dixon was a long reigning champion, but barely got by a geriatric Rocky. That says something about how shitty his era was. Gunn and Cane were probably better than Dixon if Dixon arguably lost to old Rocky. Spider Rico was a club fighter so he’s last.
Spider Rico landed the headbutt. He did so with impunity. The only man to do it. And for a cadaver, that is amazing. He is my pick. Dames y Caballeros, Spider Rico.
Spider Rico was a real fighter. He carried Rocky, cos if he beat him bad the movies woulda never got made, and he knew this. 18-3-2 with 14 KO's
agREED w/the Consensus... Apollo Creed Gratist Uv Are Tymes...Clubber Lang vs. Ivan Drago the Best Matchup of the Bunch...That Shit Would Be BETTER Than Foreman-Lyle!!!... REED
I believe Lang is slightly overrated. He was kind of a very poor man’s Tyson who used a lot of intimidation to weaken his opponents. In the ring he had weak endurance, was too emotional and lacked self control. He also seemed to lack fundamentals, ring generalship, an inside game and a jab. Lang only seemed to throw power shots but he was tough as hell, strong as an ox and mean. I think that would have been enough to get him to a least top 5 in most divisions but pound for pound I think Drago wastes him. On the contrary Drago seems to be underrated here. His strength, skill and size made him a highly formidable opponent. He didn’t have the flashy record of Creed but we saw with our on eyes how he pushed Rocky to the brink flooring him several times to the point he would have clearlywon that fight had it gone to the cards. He was soundly trained, well rounded, powerful and durable. He should have gone through progression building rather than a straight to the top program. Perhaps his biggest downfall was a mix of overconfidence and underestimating Rocky’s will to win. The biggest knock on Drago however, is the hometown cooking in Russia, in other words how good is he without the clean and the clear.
We never saw Creed's prime, and he was what 47-0 before Rocky??! He's #1 by default Lang is one-dimensional, but it was one helluva dimension Drago is basically the HW Lomachenko, making his pro debut against the HW champion and winning the fight until Rocky showed championship mettle Gunn got KO'd by a retired Rocky in a street fight, he would probably get khtfko in a sanctioned championship match Dixon should have never struggled with a 60-year old Rocky
Creed was KILLED by Drago. No way Creed is higher. Drago was a MACHINE. Drago Lang Creed Gunn Dixon Rico Cane
