I know I usually save these for the week of, but like I said, I have no interest in the AJ fight this week. Does Smith have any chance of pulling an upset on Tainted Beef boy? We know Smith is long, rangy, and has power in both hands, but doesn't really present anything Canelo hasn't seen before. I suspect he gets taken out w/a body shot just like his brother did.
Decent Fight, but the Only Bit of SUSPENSE is if Canelo STOPS Smith or Not... Canelo by UD or Late KO... REED
Smith is decent with good pop but far too straight up-and-down to beat a guy as dynamic as Canelo, even though I think Alvarez is massively overrated.
But I'm basically in complete agreement with SnD. Smith too basic, and there's no doubt they'll be some way Canelo uses that ridiculous frame against him. Either via body shots or contractual agreement.
I know we disagreed on this a few weeks ago, but I still feel Plant had a better shot at upsetting Canelo.
To be honest, I haven't seen much of Smith but as a 6 '3 super middle with an 8 inch reach advantage over Canelo, he's freakishly big and rangey. No way that he wins this one?
Smith is inconsistent, also due to styles. At his best he has looked very good, he is quite fast, rangy and has power in his fists. The way he defeated Groves and N'Dam was impressive. His latest outing against Ryder was poor (might have been overconfident), and also his WBSS bouts against Skoglund and Holzken were lethargic. As for Canelo, he still is underrated by the experts. He is one of those guys who are better than he looks from far out. He gets around his opponents guard and blocks punches up close very effectively, and his punching power has increased through the years. Props for Canelo for challenging himself here, and I think he will win in the late rounds after a close fight
I think "no way" is a stretch. I mean, Canelo isn't Roy Jones good to say that any fight against a solid opponent is a foregone conclusion. But I don't think Smith's odds are good. He has maybe a 15-20% chance.
You know, Canelo has ONCE AGAIN stacked the deck in his favor. He's probably known for quite awhile now that he was picking Smith - so he's been preparing for Smith. Smith just found out a few weeks ago he's Canelo's opponent. There's shady shit around EVERYTHING about Canelo.
I don't think this is particularly rare at the very top, tbh, this is more how boxing works. Plus, I am pretty confident that Callum has known about the fight for longer than when it was made public to the audience. Also, Smith is a Matchroom fighter and in a good position himself. If he had felt the situation to be unfair, he had no duty to accept the fight. He wouldn't get the same salary, but he could defend his title much easier, if he wanted to
Smith said he didn't know for certain until Canelo announced it on his Instagram. He also said ideally he would have liked more time to prepare. I don't think it would matter - I suspect Canelo is just much better than Smith, but it's worth noting. The deck is always in his favor.
To Ugo's Point, This Isn't RARE Though... In and Around Canelo's Weight Range(s), EVERYBODY Knows How he Operates...Or @ Least They SHOULD by Now... By the Time Canelo Announced the Smith Fight on Instagram, There's Little Doubt That Bout Had Been Negotiated Behind the Scenes for a MONTH or More...So it's Not Like Smith was Surprised to Learn He was Facing Canelo...It Didn't Just Spring Up Out of NOWHERE... Granted, Smith Hadn't Dedicated a CAMP to Canelo @ that Point, But Even in Down Time, ELITE Fighters Should Always Have an Eye on That Next Guy...Or the CASH COW In/Around Their Division... Studying Footage of Canelo Should've Been a Part of Smith's Routine ANYWAYS, Prior to the Fight Being Made Official...As Loooooooooooooong as Smith's Weight DIDN'T Get Out of Hand in the Interim, He's Got Adequate if Not OPTIMAL Prep Time... REED
Must.say that clenelo looks like an absolute midget next to smith. Makes the fight a bit more interesting
Smith looks very calm and confident in the interviews I saw. Not that its gonna determine the outcome, but its a good sign that he doesn't seem intimidated by the moment. He said, "I respect Canelo, but I dont fear him," I like that line. Cmomnmnnm Callum boy! Destroy this fuckin overrated clown!
Smith's chance is with his size. Stylewise, he is basic, and Canelo will make himself even smaller to beat his body like a bongo drum. Honestly, Canelo beating on him and possibly stopping him is only dependent on how well his slow feet cut Smith off. Smith will need to jab for his life, but Canelo will counter it, and I don't see Smith as a top class ring general either.
Against scrub level Smith's power has been impressive, he took out Rocky Fielding inside a round while it took three from Canelo. If Smith lands he can hurt Canelo, but I believe Canelo will block most of his shots and take over after six rounds
