A few years ago I was working with a promising young boxer in South Texas and had the opportunity to meet him several times, and to visit his gym for sparring.
I was familiar with him, having seen him fight on Spanish language UHF stations way back when. It was an honor to meet him and to visit his gym.
And we beat up his guy.

 

Didn't he twice fight and lose to Jorge Lujan? That's where I know the name from.

 

Yes, Lujan, and he lost to Wilfredo Gomez.

That would be very cool. The only video I found a minute ago was the Gomez fight.

I like Lujan. Kind of a lazy type, but when he was on and let his hands go, he's right up there just below the true bantamweight elites.

 

I also like Lujan. That style is one of my favourites. Unless it's the first 10 rounds of the Davilla fight, he's really fun to watch too.

 

Back in the day, the UHF channels were boxing gold. I used to watch, on Saturdays and late night, the Spanish channel and a Korean channel. That's where I first saw Rubaldino, Guty Espadas, Jiro Watanabe and Miguel Canto.

 

I was just thinking about the bantamweight tiers, and here's how I figure (you may disagree):

Lujan was basically on the same tier as Sahaprom and O.Canizales.

Then I think one tier above them you have Lora and Chandler.

One tier above Lora and Chandler you have Rose, Castillo, and Herrera.

Then of course, the highest echelon, you have Jofre, Zarate, Olivares, Ortiz, and Harada.

Nope. Not gonna lie, Grey, I had never heard of Cosme before.

 

I don't know if you looked at his record, but he beat some good fighters. Years ago I asked kikibalt, a veritable Google of SoCal boxing history, and he didn't remember him either. I remember him because of his fights with Superfly Sandoval; when I first went to the gym Alberto Sandoval and Albert Davila were the top guys in that gym.

 

I remember seeing both his fights with Sandoval. I know he beat Davila too, but I didn't see that one.

 

That used to be on his record, I'm sure of it. His record has changed over the years.

 

Cosme did beat Davila; it shows up on Davila's record but not Cosme's. @George Crowcroft might find this of interest.
