The upload of this has been removed from YouTube for quite some time, so I have re uploaded it following a request from @Xplosive . A brilliant performance from Davila against the tough and extremely underrated Duarte. The other fights on YouTube involving these two are the mistakenly labelled 2nd fight. THIS IS THE ORIGINAL. DOWNLOAD IT.
Also, I know it isn't pronounced like this, but doesn't Davilla said as Da-Vee-Ah sound so much better than Dav-Ill-are.
Oh my, the memories that brings back. That is the first time I have seen that fight, but I remember that time so well. RI9-5171, the phone number of the Olympic Auditorium is forever burned in my mind and the announcer, Jim Healey, is my all time favorite. I learned so much listening to him call fights. Albert Davila boxed out of the gym where I started and he lived pretty close to me. Little Red was my idol but Albert Davila was a world class fighter that I could see every day. And I did. Albert, while he was fighting Gomez and Pintor and Zarate, went to work every day delivering Budweiser beer. Many days when he came home there was a kid with a spotted dog sitting on the curb across the street and that was me. Frankie Duarte was an LA hero for years, especially during his comeback years later. We had a peripheral involvement, then almost a business relationship but that won't be on a public forum.
Just rewatched. Thanks, RD! Davila was just as sharp as I remembered. Excellent fighter. Going back to the earlier thread, the Gomez thread, does Inoue even BEAT Davila??
Good little fight this - Davila was excellent here. Weird to think that these two fought twice but 10 years apart. I need to watch the second one now!
May out physical him, unfortunately IMO. Davila is definitely, unquestionably superior in skills. Both have fantastic judgment of distance and reading fighters.
That's really great to here, Grey. I'm glad I could provide this for you, since you're a top poster and have taught me quite a bit.
Thanks for the upload and much appreciated! It's always nice seeing Davila getting more respect and attention, who I always see as highly overlooked and underrated these days. Davila was such a beautiful stylist and clean boxer. Loved his performance in this one, he really did put a beating on Duarte the first time around. Really hoping that more Davila fights at his best can be uploaded! Most of his fights are his losing performances sadly. There was a video of Alberto Davila vs Chul Soon Hwang years ago that got deleted, but he looked brilliant in that fight as well. If you can find that fight I would really appreciate that! I’d also love to see his fight against Alberto Sandoval, Rodolfo Martinez, and his first fight with Lupe Pintor as well.
I would love to see the Rodolfo Martinez fight. Does film of that fight exist? Also, @roughdiamond by any chance do you have any fights of Enrique Pinder?
If anybody could have benefitted from a super flyweight division being around in the 70s, it's Davila. I'd take him over Juan Estrada in a SECOND.
I've always said that Davilla was Zarate's best win. Need to revisit Pintor-Zarate. Haven't seen in about three years, and my scoring skills have gone up immensely since then. See if I still have Pintor winning.
