Any fighters in mind that you can think of that possesses really fast hand speed but in contrast they have slow footwork?
Ryan Garcia is the first to come to mind. What I notice about him is that despite his quick hands he sure does move like a plodder, which is something I would like for him to improve on down the road.

Felix Trinidad and Chico Corrales are the best examples I can think of.

Both had slow feet, but very fast hands.

Also, Eder Jofre belongs, IMO. Jofre had excellent technical footwork, but his feet did appear especially fast.

His hands were fast and explosive, though.

Arguello might be the best fighter to have had slow feet relative to his hands.

Yeah, I should have thought of Alexis first.

Or maybe the VERY BEST example we should have started with is Joe Louis.

I don't think Joe Louis had slow feet. Sure they weren't as quick as his hands, but they weren't slow.

Michael Dokes is right up there.

Mark Johnson didn't have fast feet relative to his hands, but he probably doesn't belong because his feet weren't slow.

He just didn't have Jones, Leonard, Camacho type footspeed.

Louis walked around the ring. He turned like a guy that had maybe 200 degrees open to him rather than the full 360. He did have very slow feet relative to his hands.

Louis did what Ali said Foreman did. Hands up, walk forward, like a Mummy.

His constantly improving defense.......which he was able to mend on the fly against scrubby opposition, meant he was able to pick off shots. He also knew how to jab into range and let go with very accurate salvos which meant he got a lot of work done everytime he got around to doing work,

They also trained back in the day in that gym with all sorts of sparring, and what I heard was you sparred if you were the same age, not the same division.

So a 13 year old lug like Louis would have had to spar 13 year old featherweights which is probably where Louis learned how to get into position better.

Today of course they got these morons in the gym beating each other up in front of a crowd of dickheads just dying to upload it.

"Deh you go champ!! He know!! Deh you go!!!!"

    No mate. That's not coaching.

Louis learning how to cut off the ring.

His style made him look slower than he was but there's no footage of Louis scooting about either.

His style was to get his hands up and shuffle on in....it made him look ponderous.

The other thing about Louis.......he's basically the next level up from Jack Dempsey along the evolutionary chain.

You got Corbett, then Jack Johnson, then Dempsey......then Louis.

He was removed from the caveman style but there were no bells and whistles.

It's not till Marciano that you get that "let's work on your many weaknesses with a tailored training programme" attitude to a training camp.

Today, Louis would probably be trained to fight a lot like Mike Tyson with an emphasis on faster darting footwork and more upperbody movement.

Louis looked very quick on his feet vs the Baer brothers and in the Schmeling rematch IMO.

I'd look quick on my feet vs Baer and I put no stock on that Schmeling rematch- Schmeling was absolutely not going to be permitted to leave the building that night with the W. The shit that went on before that fight was insane.

Buddy Baer was a 6'6" fighter in the 1930's. They tended to be a bit clunky.

I don't get your point. Just because the opponent was slow doesn't mean Louis was. The fights I mentioned are his best performances.

We're just talking relative to handspeed. Joe Louis' footspeed did not match his blazing fast hands.

It's a rare that an elite fighter is VERY slow on his feet.

Even with Arguello, Corrales, and Tito, they weren't sloths on their feet, just not quick relative to their handspeed.

But overall, it's rare, especially among attacking fighters.

You have guys like Tyson, Duran, and Pac, who were just very rare athletic phenoms.

Harada at flyweight was also a rare physical phenom.

Tszyu didn't have slow feet. He actually closed the distance very quickly.

Antonio Cervantes should be added, as I mentioned him earlier.

Not the most mobile guy, but his hands were very quick - his right cross could be lighting fast.

I probably put him up on an unfair bar. I admit he doesn't belong here.

He was too athletic to belong in this thread.

How about Monzon? Not sure if his handspeed qualifies as "very fast" like the title says, but I think they were deceptively fast.
