I think the top 5 is manageable for me, even with limited footage of two of the three (well, limited winning footage of one). 1. Pac 2. Fighting Harada 3. Pancho Villa 4. Flash Elorde 5. Jung Koo Chang or Khaosai Galaxy, I'm torn. Someone feel free to make the 6-10 for me.
Dunno about the last two, here's eight. #08. Venice Borkhorsor #07. Ceferino Garcia #06. Jung Koo Chang #05. Masao Oba #04. Flash Elorde #03. Pancho Villa #02. Manny Pacquiao #01. Fighting Harada
Depending on where I would place Chang/Khaosai, I would have Ohba as my #7. He might be a dark horse, but given his long reign of dominance I don't think it's crazy for Myung Woo Yuh to make the top 10. The more I watch of him, the more I realize how underrated he is. Truly like a light flyweight Chavez. No, not AS good as JCC, but still a spectacular offensive technician, and like Chavez, underrated defensively.
I love Yuh (I already made the 'not flirting' joke, so don't try it), but I don't see it. Too many options from other Asians countries to go above him. What about Russians? Ukrainians? Are they Europe or Asia?
1. Manny Pacquiao 2. Fighting Harada 3. Pancho Villa 4. Jung-Koo Chang 5. Speedy Dado 6. Ceferino Garcia 7. Hiroyuki Ebihara 8. Flash Elorde 9. Khaosai Galaxy 10. Masao Ohba Something like that, maybe.
The groupie in me wants to find a place to put Watanabe in. I dunno if he's above him in greatness, but I would consider Watanabe better than Ohba.
Dado at five? Damn, that's high man. I think the only way I'd have him that high is if he actually won the series with Wolgast.
Not gon lie, he slipped my mind. But yes, he could definitely make the top 10, considering many argue that it comes down to either Pone or Khoasai as the greatest Thai.
If he did that he’d be in contention for #1. He already has a superior wins resume to any of the others. His record is just marred by a lot of late career losses. He’s hardly unique in that regard, though. He beat Newsboy Brown, Baby Arizmendi, Panama Al Brown, and Rodolfo Casanova. That’s 3 fighters in my top 100 and 4 with a legitimate case. In addition to the Draw with Wolgast. And that’s just at the very top. I might’ve even underrated him. I remember ranking him as high as third and I’m starting to recall why.
For someone like me who has watched almost none of the guys listed here (save Pacquiao), what's two or three fights worth watching first to start to gain an appreciation?
Start with Harada vs Pone Kingpetch 1. Its on YouTube. Matter of fact Ironbar recently uploaded it. Or you can watch either of the Harada-Jofre fights. For Jung Koo Chang, you can YouTube his two fights with Hilario Zapata, especially the rematch where he destroys Zapata, or you can look for his first fight with German Torres, which was a really good performance.
Here Double, I'll make it easy for you - start with Harada, Chang, and Ohba. Harada: Chang: Ohba: Ohba died eerily similar to Sanchez - at 23-years-old and the peak of his career in a car crash.
Ceferino Garcia is an interesting case. He didn't have the consistency or dominance of a Galaxy or Chang, but his wins over HoFers Fred Apostoli and Lloyd Marshall rank among the best ever scored by an Asian fighter.
So far, watched Chang's rematch with Zapata and his first fight with Torres. Never seen so many head feints. But what really struck me about Chang is the bad intentions on his shots. He really tries to hurt his opponent with almost every shot.
Chang was a beast. The light flyweight GOAT, and I'm sure if he was prime in the 90s, Lopez would have ducked him.
You've just watched the only two fights which Chang trained for properly, supposedly. Those were his two best performances by a mile, IMO. But he was in some other great fights against other top fighters: Chitalada I & II; both were good fights in which I thought Chang won clearly in both (Chitalada being an ATG flyweight); Zapata I was an extremely close fight which gets the robbery label way too often, and it's a great watch; the rematches with Torres are brilliant fights with a massive puncher; his final career fight with Kittikasem was brutal war with countless KDs, a come from behind KO and a awesome action. His two fight series with Hideyuki Ohashi shows Chang in a nutshell. When he's on, he's one of the most talented little men ever. When he's not - and he's struggled to make weight - he's one of the most entertaining in the lower weight divisions who gets in great brawls. His fight with Tokashiki is honestly one of the best I've ever seen, and definitely his most entertaining IMO. If you're only gonna watch one of these I've mentioned, make it this one.
Same. I have heard/seen the four guys at the head of most of these lists but the rest I've seen nothing. Going to have a good goose over the weekend. MTF
