I like both of Big Ls, and Pun's first. Great stuff. I know it's a cliche to even bring him up, but Eminem's albums from SSLP to the Eminem Show were great. Wu Tang is great, I love every member. Way better than NWA IMO
seen the roots plenty of times. but i saw black thought solo wit J. Period just rapping the entire time and it cemented it for me. not to mention the guy still murdering every album and feature in 2020-2021
Yeah, he had that gangster style and imagery that was a big influence on the next generation after him.
@George Crowcroft - I see you like MF Doom. Have you heard his pre-Doom stuff, when he was known as Zev Love X?
Good point! This was early 90s - he was in a group called KMD with his brother Subroc (who died unfortunately) and they put out two albums. The first one, 'Mr Hood', is a classic.
The original version of Raw with Kane & G Rap is great, I didn’t hear that version until about a year ago That’s the good thing about technology now, it’s so easy to find music now. Back around 93’, I had been looking forever at the stores for the Deep Cover single or soundtrack and couldn’t find it. The movie was playing on TV, so I recorded it, played the ending credits, and put a tape recorder beside the TV speaker so I could get a copy of the song. Now I can go to YT and they have so much random stuff.
If I was being objective, Rakim would have to be near or at the very top and so would G Rap. But this is my own personal top 5 so it's a bit more idiosyncratic: 1. Big Daddy Kane 2. Melle Mel 3. Lord Finesse 4. Q Tip 5. Big L
Anyone notice how Mike Tyson is so often connected to these rap/street beefs? Tupac got killed right after the Seldon ‘fight”. He recorded a song for Tyson for him to come out to for the Bruno rematch. Tyson was also friends with Eric ‘Zip’ Martin, who allegedly supplied the murder weapon for Keefe D & Orlando Anderson to kill Pac. Jimmy Henchman worked with Tyson later on in the early 2000s. Henchman ordered the Times Square attack on Tupac in 94’. 50 Cent’s G-Unit crew smacked Henchman’s son in front of a courthouse, he retaliated by having one of them (Lodi Mack) murdered and is doing life for it. Tyson’s “eat his children” rant was after his fight with Lou Savarese, which he dedicated to Darryl Baum (Hommo/Homicide). 50 Cent claimed in a song that Hommo was the one who shot him. Hommo was killed on orders by Damien ‘World’ Hardy, who was engaged to Lil Kim. World’s associates said in court that there was word going around that Tyson put up $50k to have World killed in retaliation for his friend. They were debating on whether or not to kill Tyson first. Tyson’s life story is pretty nuts
Have you seen any good hip hop docs in the past few years? Time is Illmatic (basically like the making of Illmatic) and Murder Rap (Big & Pac’s murders) were good. I still haven’t seen that Hip-Hop Evolution series yet. Most of the biopic movies they do are lame and watered down. I also thought G Rap outshined him on The Symphony.
hip hop evolution is pretty decent, ive watched several of them. other than that no documentaries spring to mind. agreed on symphony, both of them.
Biggie was a better technical MC. 2Pac was a better artist who had more variety in his music so he had more stuff easier to relate to. He was a soulful rapper. MATW is his best album IMO, but my god, it is one grim, depressing album.
