What are some of the greatest wins for boxers 40 and iver ??? I might be drawing a blank but it seem they aren't many... The ones I can think of are: Pac vs Thurman Hopkins is the runaway pick here, with a tons of quality wins after he hit the big 40. Tarver, Pavlik, Pascal, Weight and a tons of lesser ones too Moore was known has a quality fighter's in his 40's but I don't recognize a lot of quality wins past 1956 (the names I know, Rademacher, Durelle and Cotton , weren't top dogs, though I admit my knowledge of this era is limited). Afterward the names I can think of are quite mediocre.... Foreman vs Moorer ( I don't rate Moorer at hw) Holmes vs Mercer (probably the best of the bunch but Mercer was inconsistent, though he seemed in shape for this one) Holy vs Oquendo There has to be better picks Edit: Klitshko vs Chisora and Poverkin vs Whyte but now I'm really scrapping the bottom of the barrel... Robinson vs Ralp Dupas seems like another top one even though the consensus is that it was a robbery
Moore's DOB has been disputed, but he was at least in his mid 40s when he derailed the rise of big punching HW prospect Alejandro Lavorante. Duran was nearing 50 when he beat ex-MW champ (and future CW contender) Jorge Castro up at 168. Bob Fitzsimmons was credited by some newspapers with beating Philadelphia Jack O'Brien when he was 41.
I wouldn't have said that Povetkin vs Whyte was scraping the barrel. Whyte was basically in line for a title shot, hadn't lost in years, and had a decent streak albeit at a particular level. It nonetheless was an undefeated streak and had some highlight-reel KO's on it. But what makes it worthy is that Povetkin had been down twice and relied on being 40 to get the job done. He used all his experience and took the guy out, one shot, clean. Not only was Whyte a big favourite but was also in total total control at the time. It will be a great KO no matter what.
I've heard in a barbershop that Joe Louis was 76 years old when he lost to Marciano. It means he was already in his fifties when he started his pro career. Basically, he built top-10 all time heavyweight resume as a senior citizen. Close this thread, we have a winner.
Hopkins moving up a historically difficult jump from middleweight to light-heavy and beating, and not only beating, but pitching a shut out and dropping the best light-heavyweight in the world enroute to winning the ring magazine title at the age of 41. Not to mention having gone through a tough middleweight career with 23 world title fights. It's a great win IMO.
And then Tarver, after he was 40, traveled down to Australia and won the CW title by walloping Danny Green. He also won a couple fights up at HW after that.
I think the point was that bhop redefined the definition. He's the real old mangoose. Got better wins after 40 than before that
To be fair, Archie was an Old Mongoose in his own right. His entire title reign was while he was past prime IMO, that's incredibly impressive.
It might be really close but how old was Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012 when he knocked out Pacquio? 40?
I believe he was a year shy of his 40th, but he was a few months shy of his 41st when he beat Alvarado.
