What I'm reading is that they offered JMM four hundred grand to fight Hamed.

Which was Arum asking price (so probably settle for less) for Marquez for the first Pac fight. When JMM was much more known. This is not helping your argument at all.
$1-million purse for Manny still in works

Didn't Manny Stewart once admit on TV that he told Hamed to duck JMM?

Maybe he decided he needed to accept an obvious lowball offer this time? Maybe he figured that four hundred grand was a fair payment to fight Pac, who was hardly comparable to Hamed, in terms of earning power, in 2003?

Strangely, I can't find anything confirming how much he was actually paid for that fight.

if the WBOgus would have ever enforced the mandatory and it went to a purse bid marquez would have made MUCH more than half a mill

People can argue all they want how much somebody is "worth". The fact is if you make an offer that you know somebody won't accept you can't then honestly claim you tried to make the fight happen. It's purely for appearances.

It would be like if somebody is selling a sports car for a hundred grand. I know they already got some low ball offer of 40. Based on that i offer 50 and when (not if) they reject it I say "i made the best offer you've received so clearly you're playing games and just don't want to sell".

Anyone think JMM is awful for Loma?

Well if the car was for sale for a long period of time, I'd say the potential buyer is right lol. Seems to me the seller is indeed unreasonable and trying to get way over the market price. Basic case of Supply and Demand.

Don't get me wrong though, Nas resume is pretty poor for such a longtime champ with his starpower, so obviously he was never keen on making the tough fights. And I have no doubt either he didn't want to fight Marquez earlier when he was his mandatory. But at this point of his career, boxing fans and HBO were tired of seeing Nas in ''showcase'' fights and there was a real push to get him a top opponent. Proof: Barrrera was Nassem next opponent. JMM could have gotten the fight instead of Sanchez had he not overestimated his worth, like he did numerous time in his career. So we can't put the blame (solely) on the Prince for this fight never materializing.

Not particularly. If it's one weakness Marquez had it was being too flat-footed. That's not to say Loma would beat him, but the speed and angles would provide JMM a lot to contend with.

    Definitely possible.

My general view though is that Marquez's cross-counter is very well-timed, and Loma's already shown a bit of a weakness as he squares up - as most aggressive southpaws do. Loma really loves to dip to his right. I can't see him doing that more than once before JMM looks for that double left uppercut. Loma's also definitely a little weak to the body IMO, so that key combo may be very troublesome for Loma.

Loma doesn't really fight on his toes, and I can only really remember him doing that vs Salido, Teo and Russell. Obviously, he lost two of those.

I feel it would be a great fight. Still a bit hard to gauge Loma's worth exactly but I think he matches really well with JMM. 51/49 fight with a slight edge to Matquez

Marquez did pretty well against a southpaw with far more speed and athleticism than Loma.

Wouldn't take him too long to adjust.

Good points, but the way i'm looking at it Loma isn't going to approach the fight like Manny. Both are southpaws with excellent speed (hand and foot) but Pac would always try to answer when he got caught. Sometimes it benefitted him but more often than not it favored Marquez.

I don't see Lomachenko doing that. It would be all about hit and not get hit. Not as enthralling to watch but more likely to occur.

I agree with George about Marquez's left uppercut being a key punch against Loma.

To be honest, Marquez market value was pretty low at the time. He had that horrible performance against Norwood not long before

Exactly, now people see this as a super fight, since Marquez built an HoF career over the years, but at the time, he was a nobody. Only the hardcore knew him and even amongst them, his stock has taken a big drop after the Norwood fight. It's laughable to claim that 400k was a lowball offer but people look at this one with hindsight glasses (tinted by disgust of Hamed, which is understandable as no one likes a cherrypicker but irrelevant to this case).

Somewhat off topic, but I feel like Loma is destined to be remembered as a fighter who "maybe/could've" given great fighters tough fights, but will seldom deserve to be the actual favorite when those matchups are discussed. Regardless of what talents he had, 16 fights (with 2 losses) and career best wins over Gary Russell and Linares just won't give you much of a basis to be favored over Mayweather- and Marquez-level opposition.

Good point, and this is what is hard when picking an underdog in mythical matchup. Feel preposterous picking a far less proven fighter over a legend. Taken to the extreme though, it brings the ridiculous proposition of having Ali or Robinson never losing in such matchups.

But on another note, I think Walter and Rigondeaux should be ranked way above Linares on Loma palmeres of his best wins

    Exactly.

I believe I was quite fair in saying that the best guy I would favor over him at junior lightweight is Brian Mitchell.

Its almost like I got criticized for that, when Mitchell is a HOFmer.

the brothers dim dont seem to comprehend how the finances in boxing work.

if the WBOgus ever had enforced marquez's mandatory position he would have been entitled to 20-25% of the pot.

Lomas wins over Walters, Russell and Rigondeaux are solid. But he needs more if he's going to be worthy of the acclaim he already gets.

No, I understand the situation perfectly, it's not like if the 75/25 purse bids split (and variation) between champ and mandatory challenger is some well kept secret. But unlike you, I'm not naive enough to believe boxing is a rule-based sport. The only immutable rule in boxing is that the fighter with the stronger hand calls the shots. No way Hamed was agreeing to go to purse bid and give JMM 25% of the pot. And if the WBO had tried to enforce it, he simply would have vacated. If Marquez thought otherwise, the he was an absolute fool.
