Who had the more successful career? As in, who belongs higher in a pound for pound list - not who made more, was more popular, etc; and who's skill, attributes/abilities were better in a vacuum? Or if that's too intense for you, then who do you deem better head-to-head at their weight (although I don't like that one as much because middleweight is quite a bit better at the top end IMO). What say you? I'll give my proper thoughts after I've read through some of this bad boy
I also think Jofre is a little bit better. He's a bit better in the chin area (both great though) and seems to be a bit if a better puncher, too (again, both similar level). He's undebatably quicker and probably has better feet. He's a much better combo puncher, too. Jofre impresses me a lot more in a vacuum with no opponents, he has a much more complete skillset IMO. He actually reminds me a little bit of Carlos Ortiz but with more power. Monzon has the edge in the areas he always does - ring-generalship, taking away his opponents best tools, and his temperment. If you fell into the web Monzon was spinning, you weren't getting out. He's like the baddie in a game who takes away your best moves. He takes away your A-game, and you can't beat him with your B-game. There's no one good enough, and if there was, he could take that too. He's one of the hardest men ever to beat IMO. I definitely agree Monzon has the better résumé, but I think it's very arguable that he has no wins better than Medel - or maybe even Legra. But his overall collection of wins is much, much better. I don't think Jofre has the résumé to defend some of the rankings people give him. He definitely doesn't belong above the likes of Ortiz or Gavilan IMO. Monzon also has the consistency element over Jofre, which is rare.
I think the gap in P4P power is pretty significant. Monzon scored stoppages through attrition and through his incredible accuracy - one of the most accurate fighters ever. Jofre had legitimate fight ending power in either hand that Monzon didn't really possess. I agree 100% about every other word you said.
I think Monzon was better within his prime weight class than Jofre was within his, but I think a case can be made that Jofre ranks higher P4P all-time (or at least that it's debatable) based on his late career comeback and winning a title in a second major weight class.
I disagree, even though your position is totally reasonable to have. I think the early 60s Jofre was better at bantam than Monzon was at middle. But I'm not complaining at all if you think otherwise. Both Monzon and Jofre have a case as the #2 greatest Latin fighter.
