Yes but what cut the comeback short?

I honestly think Hatton might have come back into it a bit vs Mayweather until Joe Cortez got involved too much for my liking.

Hatton fans who complain about the Floyd fight are literally the biggest hypocrites on Earth. They cry about ref intervention supposedly affecting the Floyd fight outcome, when it's the greatest irony considering that Ricky's hometown ref played a role in his win over Tszyu, and in bailing him out from being KO'd by Juan Lazcano.

    Yeah, I avoid doing that.

Although, in fairness, I don't think either result would've changed if the referees were impartial.

I never said that Cortez determined the outcome. What he did was tie up a lot of the loose ends and just make sure of things.

Secondly, that is hardly the point. Let's say Tszyu was robbed vs Hatton. That doesn't mean Hatton wasn't robbed vs Floyd.

Thirdly, Hatton won the Tszyu fight hands down, the reinvention of that fight as being some sort of mugging is right up there with the Benn vs McClellan myth. Tszyu threw the the first serious low blow. Hatton threw a load of clean leather in there and took a load of it too.

Nobody can argue against the unwarranted imposition of Joe Cortez. He routinely fucked with Hatton.

There;s a difference between the permitting of alleged "roughousing" which permits BOTH to go at it, by omission, and the positive interference of Joe Cortez who allowed Floyds throat-bars and forearm slams and called out Hatton, going to his corner to interfere, taking the point off etc.

Everybody knows that Cortez has a sick daughter and mounting medical bills and was wide open to being compromised, and he was compromised.

The Lazcano fight I will give you, but it meant a lot lot less in that fight, and it still doesn't affect what happened in the Mayweather fight.

Hatton loses. He didn't show me enough in that fight to make the case for him winning at 147 vs Floyd.

But Floyd broke the rules all night and never got called on it.

Cortez is compromised, and had been for years.

He was the center of more bullshit after that too, Floyd vs Ortiz and Soto vs Lorenzo.

With a ref like Goldstein in there instead of Cortez, I think Hatton-Mayweather is much more competitive and shows that Mayweather has massive issues with swarmers - epecially quick ones like Hatton - even if Hatton gets stopped a little bit earlier.

I can't honestly say what would or wouldn't have happened, I believe Hatton beats Tszyu no matter who referees it and I believe Mayweather beats Hatton likewise, but I can say that Cortez was in there to do a job, and he did that job.

Just who the referee is ........very often understated importance.

Amir Khan beats Peterson with any other referee. But that referee made Khan fight on the inside instead of being allowed to push Peterson back with his open gloves.

That whole "Cat in the Hat" episode still makes me laugh.

Khan was just getting back into it........until.......the Cat in the Hat did some shit.

I view that as nothing more than karma - Hatton got a taste of his own medicine.

Again, the notion of Hatton being a grabby grabster was an invention of the latter fights when his drinking and weight issues caught up to him.

People took the Urango fight and they transplanted that onto his whole career.

    It's simply not the case.

And even if it was, it doesn't explain why Cortez let Floyd do what he did.

While i'm glad a lot of Hatton's tactics were negated by the official it's also shit when it's done selectively.

If Hatton was "A side" and Floyd was just another contender Cortez would have called it differently.

The guy used questionable tactics in his biggest win (Tszyu).

A rough fighter like Hatton has no room to complain when he gets outroughed.

Ricky was EXTREMELY arrogant coming into the Mayweather fight. He thought Floyd was a softie who would just run all night.

When he realized that Floyd was stronger and meaner than him, it completely threw him off.

I never even thought Hatton was that dirty vs KT.

Someone like Fenech was far worse, and he never gets shit for it.

I mean, let's say that is all true. Imagine Joe Cortez being confronted about this afterwards and saying "Yeah but Ricky was disrespectful".

It still makes no sense- even if it was all true.

Hatton doesn't have any room to complain i completely agree. We're not talking about Ricky's grievances.

Look at it the other way. Floyd goes to fight in England as the challenger. The ref allows Hatton to dry hump him without any intervention. Mayweather gets (rightly) tired of it and uses some elbows and other rule bending tactics and is immediately warned. Ricky continues but when it's Floyd who retaliates points are deducted.

Afterward it's somehow justified because Mayweather was EXTREMELY arrogant coming in? "Karma" is not a criteria for refereeing or scoring.

This is the essence. I take it a step further....Ricky got this reputation as grabber that was out of call proportion to the reality...Floyd throat barred him and Cortez was in on it. Floyd beats him 9.5 out of 10, but that's not the test. The test is whether he'd have done better or been in it a bit more and I believe he would have. Hatton was allowed to grapple and work inside vs Paulie because as Whiskey pointed out , A side beats B side in boxing politics everytime. The thing is that we wanted to see Paulie forced to fight a bit, but not so much Floyd .

I'm not arguing too much beyond that narrow narrow point.

Tony Sibson v Dangerous Don Lee

Sibson started well, dropping Lee in the first, but when Lee turned southpaw he turned the fight around and dropped Sibson 3 times in the third. It looked like it was over for Sibbo but slowly he started turning the fight his way and finally caught up with Lee in the 8th, dropping the American. But Lee came back that same round and stretched Sibbo for the count.

Yeah just found it. Sibson has the short hair. That means he's old. I always hated how men suddenly no longer had flowing hair. Barry Sheen, James Hunt, Sibbo, it usually meant they'd gotten old and shit.

LOL that fight is worth watching just for the Pachechoism at the very end.......

"Big trouble for Don Lee. Sibbo is smelling blood".

Sibson KO'd literally 1 second later.

Don Lee was in some real fun fights. The aforementioned Sibson fight, a foul filled war with Paul Whittaker and the draw with DeWitt was fun too. I haven't seen the Harding fight but that'd either be a war or a beatdown. I also like the Watson dissection, but it's not a fight you want to watch for see Lee at his best.

It's possible that Lee was good or that Sibson simply took the fight too soon after the Hagler fight.

Certainly today no ranked MW would be taking fights like that after a fight like that with Hagler.

Tall southpaws after a beating from a rangy southpaw? Makes no sense.

I think Watson would have been too much for Sibson but that Benn would have been much more Sibsons style, as Benn always allowed guys a chance to get back into fights, especially in that early part of his career.

Yeah, for sure. I think he'd be quite avoided today. Imagine Paul Williams with fight ending power. TBH, I think he'd beat the fuck out of Mungia and Murata. Current GGG, Charlo and Andrade probably beat him - Charlo definitely does - but he's a live underdog IMO.

McGowan vs Medel. Walter got walked onto one of Medel's death traps in the first but rallied really well for a few rounds before getting too brawly and angry like a typical Scot and getting himself stopped.

I always thought Gomez put up fierce resistance against Sanchez after that dreadful start and fought tooth and claw to 're-establish himself before Sal upped things again and stopped him.
