I'm convinced he was one of the most underrated fighters of the 90s. Never, ever gets mentioned when talking quality super flyweights. He was one helluva offensive fighter, and had a pretty solid D for an attacking fighter. I know George and Doub have seen him before (maybe Grey has, as he fought at the Forum). Not sure if any other posters would be familiar with him, but he's worth checking out.
Interesting find in this fight. This Roman was the brother of Gilberto Roman, and Borboa's idol was Gil Roman.
Part of it is people don't talk about flyweights in general. But I agree - the guy was outstanding. Just watch his fight with Quiroga. It was basically a war and Borboa hardly broke a sweat.
His fight with Sibali is good too. Not competitive, but an impressive dissection. I notice that he often ended fights with body shots.
Borboa lost his title to Harold Grey, but had he won that fight, he would have ended up fighting Danny Romero. What a war that would have been.
They fought twice. I saw parts of the first fight I believe, but never got around to watching the full thing. I assumed it would always be there, but the guy who uploaded it deleted his YT. I've heard that Borboa deserved to win both times. Then Danny Romero would go onto destroy Grey in 2 to win the title. Borboa vs Romero would have been Hell. Borboa I feel was much more skilled and complete, but Romero had a better chin and had legit one punch fight ending power. Not sure who would have won.
There's a name I haven't heard since the 90s! No, never watched his fights so thanks for the nudge, X!
Watching the first round of the Quiroga bout and that is already one of the best hook off the jabs I've seen. Bookmarking this thread. Thanks Xplosive.
I saw the first fight and thought Borboa won, some place or another I have it recorded on a VHS tape. The Forum was unique in how often close fights went against the 'house' fighter.
At least in LA he was considered to be a very good boxer with a lot of skill. For myself, if I am looking for an example of a quality fighter just working the Borboa v Roman is the one I point to. That Roman was even in that fight was a fluke. He fought Scotty Olson at the Forum and was getting smashed before Olson broke his right hand and Roman got back into it. Even then it was a very close fight. Borboa would have beaten Olson as well but it would have been a tougher fight.
