This is a case where it's a waste of time to ask who's greater... it's Sal by several miles. Does anyone believe Lopez was P4P better? I don't, but looking to see if anyone has an argument for otherwise.
Ricardo Lopez PUNCHED Harder in a Lb for Lb Sense and was a Tad More FLUID In the Delivery of his Shots, But Salvador Sanchez was Better/Greater... REED
There's aspects Lopez is better in. His form is 'correct', he doesn't have that stylistically difficulty with guys who refuse to come to him - although he has entirely different stylistic issues - and he's clearly a bigger puncher, P4P. Sanchez is greater in almost all facets though, and I don't think Lopez would make a top ten Mexicans for achievements. Be definitely would for skills though, he'd certainly be above Barrera. Although, saying that, I don't know if Barrera would be top ten either. Both very high level technicians, though. Sanchez's drawing lead, crouching and unique take on Moore's foreman guard is as high a level as you'll see in featherweight history. His movement and ring IQ doesn't need to be explained. Ricardo's matadoring feet were brilliant, especially when he changed people's relative stances. Good jab, his mid-range uppercut is pretty unique and his left hook/cross-counter had the potential to be devastating. Just in terms of positioning, he's probably as good as any other small man. He just has this stylistical blockade against elite pressure fighters with a great cross-counter. Someone like Duran that size would murder him, even if he wasn't close to as good as Roberto. In terms of pure skill, I think it's arguable that these two, along with Canto, are the three most picturesque boxers in Mexican history.
They're both close in terms of skills and ring IQ. I would say Sanchez had more tools in his arsenal though. Sanchez was definitely a much better fighter up close, as well as a counterpuncher when faced with fighters coming to him. Lopez was more of a pure boxer with a more correct stance, high guard defense, and outside fighting footwork. As George said Finito, Sanchez, and Canto are Mexico's most stylish fighters. Chavez and JMM were also picturesque as well IMO.
TBF, I said it's arguable. I prefer watching Roman to Finito for skills. Chucho Castillo is a very underrated in the skills department IMO. His fights are always fun to watch from that perspective, but also because he was one of the bravest, baddest toughest muthafuckers ever.
Yeah I hear you on that. Can't believe I forgot to mention Gilberto Roman. I still haven't gotten around to seeing enough of Chucho Castillo outside of his fights with Olivares. Any particular fights from him worth checking out?
Well, the obvious two outside of the Olivares is the Herrera rematch and the Rose fight. Both high level fights and very hard to score. The fight with Cruz on fleas channel is a brilliant example of him fighting off the ropes vs a bigger guy. He actually may be better off the ropes than he was at anything else. Which is highly impressive. The Caraballo fight is one of the best showings of a jab I've ever seen.
