Stylewise, who would be the ideal guys to make the following greats look outstanding? Ezzard Charles Archie Moore Gene Tunney Michael Spinks Harold Johnson Bob Foster Saad Muhammad Billy Conn Victor Galindez
Bob Foster - Carl Froch, for sadistic reasons. Harold Johnson - Would really outclass an idiot like Jean Pascal. Michael Spinks - I would say Kov. Kov is too fragile, both chin-wise and mentally to have a prayer. Galindez - Galindez would really chew up a face-first brawling type like say, Jeff Harding.
Charles had the perfect style and attributes to deal with a blunt-force pressure fighter IMO. He has an awesome inside game, coming with all the counters and combos he needs, as well as an outside game as good as anyone's. If he can ice Moore and Bivins, and match their strength in exchanges, then do it to anyone. I think you'd see him shine vs someone like Charles Williams. I think a boxer is best suited to Moore, someone without the physicality to fight him off. He doesn't have to worry about their skills since he'll be able to match anyone. He fought him to a draw while shot to fuck, I dread to think what a prime Moore would do to Willie Pastrano. Gene Tunney's style gets misrepresented quite a bit. He wasn't the fairy out-boxer that you see in the Dempsey fights, he was a crafty boxer-puncher with genius ring IQ and a lethal, body-centred attack. Not to mention a great jab. I think he'd have every tool needed to take apart, specifically, Jose Torres. It'd be like he was fighting a smaller, less dangerous Dempsey. He'd show the best of his skills defensively, on the back-foot and his offense in the pocket. I dunno for Spinks, coz it seems like every fight with a good-but-not-great fighter would go the same. Mike starts slowly, they have spots of success and even win one or two rounds, then he wakes up and knocks them out. Easy. LHW James Toney is made to fucking order for Harold Johnson. Toney's issues with Jones, Nunn, Reggie, McCallum and Griffin, paired with Johnson's beatdown of Hank, really makes this one easy. In terms of Bob dominating the whole fight, and ending it with a highlight reel KO, you'd need not look further than the next guy on the list. For Saad Muhammad, it'd be someone like Jose Torres; out-gunned in all physical aspects, but would still come straight at Saad. Antonio Tarver's troubles vs B-Hop, Harding, Jones and Dawson suggest he'd be lost vs Conn. Conn having taken bombs from Louis wouldn't have to worry about his power too much either. I like the Harding shout, but I'd prefer someone who'd bite on all of Galindez's feints. Someone who'd let him work off the ropes, and someone who he could knock out. I don't wanna keep on picking on him, but I think that could well be Torres
Saad would stop Jose Torres late, but he could incur a lot of damage before that. Every fight was a struggle for Saad, against far lesser fighters than Torres. But yes, Saad rallies and KOs Torres in the end.
The perfect guy for Billy Conn would be Chris Arreola. He is not smart enough to trap Conn, he is too slow to catch him and, after 3 rounds of trying, he would be exhausted.
Arreola is too scrubby to make anyone shine. Even if you blast hin fast, who cares, it's only arreola
Quite possibly. He fought Black Murderer's Row fighter, Bert Lytell who supposedly fought like a klecksographic Calzaghe; quick handed, quick footed, southpaw swarmer who's skills are good but technique is questionable. Moore beat him twice, but it wasn't easy. Although, I suppose Lytell was a bit more gritty than Calzaghe. He was definitely a lot tougher, and from reports, he was an all-round nastier fighter.
I think Spinks destroys Calz more brutally than Moore would. Look no further than the left uppercut that knocked Pops senseless. That same punch is gonna land on Calz sooner rather than later.
Froch wasn't even a 175lbr, Foster went all the way to HVY, it's not even Like vs Like, even in the sense of Good vs Not So Good, it's not Like For Like. Why not put Bob Foster in with Naseem Hamed?
Well in fairness, pre-super middleweight division, Froch would have had to be a light heavyweight. It's true he's too small for 175, but he's also too big for 160 - so he'd be screwed. He'd have no choice but to compete at light heavyweight.
