In team sports (apart from soccer) there are more breaks in the action than ever before. Mainly for commercial reasons. This development has affected the games too. The importance of endurance has regressed, whereas explosiveness and power play bigger role, as do tactics. Boxing hasn't changed in this sense in 130+ years. So I started to wonder if it should. If the breaks between rounds would be two minutes or 150 seconds, would it help the sport? Would the advertisers be more interested, would the pace of the fights increase? Would you support such change? If not, why (besides tradition)?
THIS!!! 60 Second Rest is Perfect... 15 Rounds Separates the Men from the Boys...2 of Boxings GREATEST Debates, Leonard-Hagler and Chavez-Taylor I, are NON-ISSUES if they were Both Scheduled for 15... In Fact, Leonard LOSES the 1st Hearns Fight if it's Scheduled for 12... REED Doesn't Mind the Gloves as Much, 8's for Welters and Below...10's for Everyone Else...But Definitely DO NOT Increase the 60 Second Rest Period...And Go BACK to 15 Rounds... REED
You still think fans would be interested if the WBX intercontinental fedalatin super bronze championship wasn't on the line?
'Canelo, would you entertain the idea of a 15 roun.." "GET DA FUCK OUTTA HERE, MAYNE!" "Its just 3 extra rounds..." "IM GOING TO START FUCKING YOU UP RIGHT NOW, MOTHERFUCKER!"
"It's an extra 15 million per round." "Wait, can i eat steak between rounds from the supplier of my choice"?
To Agree to 15 Rounds, Canelo Would DEMAND a 5 Minute Rest Period After the 12th, for Him Exclusively...His Opponent Would Have to Run on a Ringside Treadmill... And Rounds 13, 14 and 15 Would Be 1 Minute Each... REED
Some fighters would benefit from a 2 minute break far more than others. I think it would create as many problems as it fixes.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Whats broken? The corrupt judging needs to be regulated. The promoters need to be checked. The networks and fighters need to start working together to make the best fights. And guys should start sparring less in training camp. Juicing is a problem too, but juicing is rampant in every pro sport at this point, certainly not unique to boxing. But whats NOT broken is the basic framework of a fight - meaning 3 minute rounds with a minute in between rest. That's fine, and im very pleased that its never been altered in over 100 years.
The WBU once brought out a 20 Point Must System. It worked the same as the 10 point must system except that you scored rounds 20-19, 20-18, etc.
I've always liked the idea of 15 rounds but only reserved of unifications. Seems like it'd really add to the feel of a super fight.
15 round fights are never, ever, ever, ever coming back In fact, fights are just gonna get shortened- due to ongoing concerns about CTE, and the pussification of society. Won't happen overnight, but I think within the next 10-15 years that championship fights will drop to 10 rounds. I hope I'm wrong.
REED Can't See Championship Fights Being SHORTENED Below 12 Rounds, but Fully agREED on 15 NEVER Being Used Again... Sadly... REED
10 insanely brutal rounds. Where people get hurt. "20 slow paced rounds is the answer"- brought to you by the people who brought you Lockdowns and other good ideas.
I have always been puzzled by the preference of 15 rounders. I get it that 15 rounds might decisively solve some 12-round fights. But doesn't that lead to an obvious slippery slope argument where you could say that 20 rounds would bring even more decisive results? It isn't that long ago that fights were scheduled for 20 rounds (Joe Louis had them) but nobody demands them back. Personally I think 12 rounds is enough, but I would be open for an idea to try longer breaks
Trust a Scandinavian to try and introduce longer work breaks.................... get out!! Marxist!!!
I think they should have one fight card a year where the opponent chooses your ring walk music. And you don't know what it is until you come out. Have motherfuckers walking to the ring to the theme from Sanford & Son and shit.
If I was the "A side" fighter i would put that i get to pick opponent's ring walk music selection in every contract. Purse split, ring/glove size and all of the usual items would be negotiable but their ring walk music is off the table.
Screw that. Bring back London Prize Ring rules. We could have Canelo - GGG III as the first top bout to use them
