I think MAG is one of more underappreciated fighters of the 90s. He's only known for losing to Oscar and Tszyu. He was a very solid lightweight champ over several years, but that seems totally forgotten. Thoughts on him?
Solid guy, very tough. A gate-keeper type. He absorbed a lot punishment from Tszyu which a whole lot of other fighters wouldn't have been able to withstand.
He deserves to be called more than a gate-keeper. He was arguably the best lightweight in the world for a while, and was a borderline top 10 P4P guy in the mid-90s.
I remember in the post-Whitaker lightweight landscape being really frustrated with that division as you had 3 unbeaten titlists (Gonzalez, Nazarov and DLH) who weren't facing off against each other and then after that there was Mosley and Stevie Johnstone as well - all really talented guys but no-one was willing to prove themselves against the best. There is a missing legacy for at least one of those guys.
If one of those guys beat the other four, then I think it's pretty clear that they'd have achieved more than Whitaker did at the weight. Even if they were levels below him ability wise.
