One of the great unknown wars. Truly, this has gotta be one of the most brutal championship fights of all time. Enjoy, for those who have never seen it. I just watched it for like the 10th time.
The guy in the black hat standing by Nestor is my closest friend and partner in the boxing game. The man standing outside is my friend Solano; he has been training fighters for 50 years at this point. The legendary manager Ricardo Maldonado walked Nestor to ring center.
I think that he is doing better than he was a few years back. He is a good guy and we got along well but he was dealing with some things that I think that he has overcome.
Have you seen his fight with Enrique Sanchez? Bloodbath. Not many remember but when Barrera and Morales were coming up, right there with them was Sanchez. I believe that he stopped Barrera in the amateurs. Nestor came along quietly. He fought on a lot of shows with Nicky Bentz; my friend trained him, too. He also had Juan Garza.
The plan for that fight was for Nestor to use shifts to get in position to land his left over Sanchez's right shoulder. In the first round Nestor tried to shift right in front of Sanchez and got dropped. He did it again in the 2nd and almost went down. But he stuck with it and started paying attention to the angles and it worked well for him.
He didn't show up for camp until 10 days before the fight. And he was way overweight and had been partying very hard.
