I began to wonder why is it that boxers fight without shirts.

I believe (not sure) it goes back to 1800s when wrestling was allowed and fighting without a shirt made it more difficult for the opponent to grapple. Also back in those days somebody might have tried to cheat by using some sort of an armor under his shirt. The very first modern-rules matches were fought in circus and there they had shirts.

What about now? Do you think it is a good thing fighters still don't wear shirts since there isn't much reason for that? Is tradition the reason why we should keep fighters shirtless? Does boxing somehow feel more 'real' without shirts? Does somebody admit it has something to do with seeing muscles?

What do you think? Should fighters wear shirts?

Probably plenty of reasons they don't wear them.

    - Would look crap
    - Sweat could be an issue
    - Might be harder for a ref to distinguish between legal and low blows

I can't think of any good reasons why they should wear them.

I don't think sweat would be an issue anymore that it is in other spots that require as much movement, in fact punches would probably hurt more when they don't slip from the sweaty body. Also, if the shirt is different color from trunks, I think it might actually help to see the low blows.

It is true that there isn't much reason to wear shirts. For some reason in other individual sports (tennis, track-and-field, rowing, you name it) they do wear them however. In team sports it is obvious that the players and the referees have to be able to tell the difference between the two teams

You already answered your own question. Wearing shirt wouldnt makes much, if any, difference, so there is no reason to change the rules

I could assume that some sponsors might like the idea (since they could sell advertisements to the shirts), which also would profit fighters who don't have big promoters behind them.

Which brand of shirt, though? Ted Baker? Ralph Lauren? Tommy Hilfiger? Ben Sherman?

Just you wait...a bunch of Liberal special interest people will start campaigning that shirtless boxers is offensive and also point out that if women boxers have to wear shirts then men have to as well since the distinction is sexist.

Shirtless boxers make Sly uncomfortable so they have to go. Same with boxer briefs.

    lol

I don't even know WTF this means, but it's funny nonetheless.

I'm not one to challenge tradition just for the sake of challenging it and I detest anti-establishment liberal cunts that want to challenge every institution just for the sake of it. However in this liberal climate I can see some annoying group making a case for it on the basis of those guys that are not blessed with the aesthetic genetics of others feeling insecure about their bodies and therefore wanting everyone to cover up. You know these liberals and their fucking shit. lol

I would imagine being shirtless during a fight also keeps a fighter cooler than he would be wearing a shirt.

I agree. I just find it curious that the same reasoning doesn't apply to other sports. And as Sly said, chances are that republicans start to demand shirts at some point to 'protect our children'

Most other sports feature multiple athletes sharing the stage together so shirts make sense to help with identification. Tennis, is an obvious parallel to boxing though but that was always a "gentlemans " sport and so going topless wouldn't be appropriate. Boxing is about brutality and being a gladiator. Therefore being topless is appropriate

Don’t know how I missed this but the question shouldn’t have been should boxers wear shirts. The question should have been: should female fighters also not wear shirts? If this happened I see two possible outcomes. 1.) The ratings and pay for women fighters would skyrocket. 2.) A serious drought in female matches as women refuse to fight topless. Either outcome is a win IMO.

In early MMA it seemed like people wore whatever they wanted. Shamrock in his speedo and shoes. Gracie and others in a gi. Severn in his wrestling singlet. Some guys had a musty ass T-shirt and basketball shorts straight from Walmart.

Yeah and it was rather absurd since a gi can be used as a weapon

Yes, there were very good reasons to ban certain types of gear in the ring but just visually early UFC was cooler to look at. Kind of a like fighting video game where the characters are very distinct.

Some people's idea of "equality" is that all the rules of the game are suited to their liking. It wouldn't be women fighting topless it would be men with shirts.

Pride was even better for that imo. MMA was like a real life version of street fighter in those days

You're right. I'm tired of getting aroused by Spence's titties during his bouts. Shirts for the win!

Lmao. Yeah There was a guy that fought in a headband. Honestly there should be no different between a gi choking you or the guy with the headband ripping it off and strangling you from behind with it.
