Who wins? It would be a savage fight. I guess the most likely scenario is Fenech grinding Lopez down, but I dont think its so simple. No one came at a prime Lopez and survived. Fenech did handle the power of big punchers like Callejas and Villasana, but in fairness, Callejas and Villasana didn't hit like Danny Lopez. I could easily envision Fenech running into a right hand that he can't recover from, and Lopez was murder as a finisher. I think its a close call.
Yeah, this isn't Gomez, who had the defense and slick movement to go with his power. Lopez was so hittable that Fenech would definitely get him in trouble. Fenech would have to be on top of him the whole time to give him zero punching room, sort of similar to Hatton-Tszyu with Fenech being just as rough. I think I'd take Fenech here.
I essentially think Fenech's extra bit of class is the difference more often than not. He'd get up close and that constant pace and solid power is gonna grind him down. It should be noted that while not even in the neighboring universe in terms of power, Fenech is a tad bigger, probably stronger and is much quicker. He was excellent at getting under shots before barrelling his man back. He'd have Lopez up against the ropes for most of the fight, and I think the constant bodywork and lack of room which Lopez would have. That said, I don't actually think Fenech would take away Lopez's power by smothering him. Lopez's power was freakish. He was an incredible short puncher. In a back and forth war, Lopez has every chance of stopping him. Especially once he gets up.
Pressuring prime Lopez never proved to work. Both Chacon and Sanchez beat him playing the aggressive counterpuncher game. That wasn't Jeff. I think this is a 50-50.
Angles were the key to beating Lopez IMO. Constant half steps and pivots just seemed to baffle him. Just being able to force him to reset and then get off first from being in that superior angle just got to him. Ayala did it, Olivares did, and obviously, both Chacon and Sanchez did it. Chin aside, FW Lomachenko seems handmade to beat him.
I can't see Loma beating the mid 70s Lopez. I mean, I CAN see it, but it's the outcome I see happening. I see Loma getting gradually broken down, then stopped.
