So now that enough time has passed, I feel comfortable saying this fight was stopped out of pure hatred for Margarita. Everyone saw Margarita coming on strong again and stopped the fight in order to protect Cotto from what looked like a defeat coming. This was done because Margarita is a dirty cheat and never once had any remorse. Margarita didn’t care if he went blind. I’m not sure anyone gave a fuck either. But they used that eye as an excuse to stop it and save Cotto, who was clearly out of steam. Agree or disagree?
Same. I definitely saw the fight but I only saw it live and haven't rewatched it. My recollection was that the stoppage was fine and Cotto was well in control throughout, I'll give it a rewatch.
To be honest, i think that.the whole loading thing is overblown. As for marg-cotto 2, i don't think the stoppage was bad. His eye was a mess, and while it's true Marg had his best round just before, it didn't seems like he was on his way to turn the fight around
His eye was fucked, so they stopped it. I don't see what the argument was that it was stopped too early. Do you want him to go blind? Do you think he was going turn around a shut out to a win in the three rounds left? I certainly don't. If anything, it probably would've gotten worse for him.
It was stopped early......but I still think Cotto would've won the fight comfortably...wining one or two of those remaining rounds. "Although the geography of the fight is very similar to the first fight, it is NOT the same fight"...
Smoger did the same thing during Mike Tyson-Brian Nielsen, telling him he loved him and hugging him when he stopped it. He seemed especially affectionate during certain fights.
My notes on the fight: "Miguel Cotto v Antonio Margarito 2 Cotto dominated this one. Stoppage was a shame but wouldn't have impacted the result as Margarito was on his way to a lopsided points loss. Cotto seemed to want to make a point of showing his strength in there, pushing Margarito back on several occasions and jockeying for supremacy in the clinches rather than letting the referee break them. As has been noted, Margarito's punches didn't seem to hurt Cotto at all this time. I struggled to give him a round, although he was always competitive and I don't think he would have been stopped by Cotto's power had the eye injury not occurred." So not a controversial stoppage or one that affected the ultimate direction of the fight.
Yeah, weird dude but I always liked him and founs he was proficient. The only time I felt he was really off was in the Hopkins vs (Armenian guy I forgot his name). Sure the Armenian was super dirty but so was Hopkins. And the way he celebrated with Hopkins at the end made it look like he was far from impartial.
After hearing the doctor's justification, it makes the whole thing look even more shady. Says he stopped it, not because he thought he had a serious injury, but because he couldn't see and thus, was worried for his safety,. Ater he just had his best round.... Simply gives me a wrestlemania vibe where the vilain need to lose so that everyone gets home happy
Reminds me of a Tommy Morrison quote after the Lennox fight. "If I had trained with an eye pad, I probably would have kicked his ass"
If the fight had continued, the eye would have worsened, it was already bad. The thing is that the people who work these fights have bosses, and there is politics involved. People with medical careers, officiating careers, they would have been fired, had their careers damaged if the eye failed later on. The notion that some doctor would pull the plug just because he liked Cotto rather than because he had to obey the tenets of his office.........doesn't really hold water with me. By that same token, I can see how Margarito had become an embarrassment and had he "WON again" it would have created a "lot of problems" for........certain people.
the win saved cotto’s career. But IMO, the first fight shortened it. Shady shit goes on all the time. But this was Madison Square Garden. This stunk. But margarito and Cotto both deserved it.
Don't get me wrong: it's not so totally far fetched that Cotto would be protected by "Home town" cooking.
