A thread to share some quality film studies on fights/fighters that you come across on YT. Wilson Kayden was by far the best guy to ever post film studies. Sadly, he stopped uploading vids like 6 years ago. His page is still up though for whoever has never seen his material. Currently, the Modern Martial Artist probably posts the best film studies. Here's three recent ones he did - one on Holmes, one on Liston, and one on Jackson. The film study on Holmes was VERY VERY good! Makes me realize that maybe we've started to underappreciate Holmes again. The one on Liston is excellent also, as well as the one on Jackson, and how he generated his legendary power.
It's extremely easy to find film studies on guys like Ali, Tyson, Robinson, Floyd, Roy, Duran, Chavez, and Pac. I wish someone would go into depth on a great like Ortiz, Olivares, Spinks, Monzon, Foster, Napoles, Gomez, or Gavilan.
It’s really good. Goes to show the complexity in his style. Not as simple as it looks to the untrained eye.
The best film studies are nearly always low view. The guys who know what they're talking about usually don't know how to make a flashy video!
Also, escudo (the writer from ESB), alongside his articles, has a youtube channel where he watches fights and notes techniques and sequences as he watches. It's called 'Come Watch Fights'. On film studies, I used to like LeeWylie but for a while now he's just been milking the same fighters and watered down explanations for views. Others have good video quality but aren't that in depth. I think the simple fact is that most who make videos don't know as much as they think (at least the bigger channels). I honestly think you're better off reading a poster like @Greynotsoold and then looking for things in films of your choosing. And on Kayden, he's one of the best I've seen explaining the centre line concept efficiently. I like this one ironically because of how simple it is:
Wow! Thanks for all of these, RD. Will get to watching them later today, probably starting with the Monzon studies. I've always, always enjoying watching Monzon fight. I know many consider him dull, but not me. He was one of the best, most efficient, and most intelligent technicians the sport has ever seen. Without question he's top 10, or even top 5 in ring IQ. No emotion, just clinical, methodical, pathological execution.
Quite possibly my all-time favourite YouTube video. Different guy, but Lee Wylie is awesome when it comes to film studies.
Brilliant Ezzard Charles film study. This guy is really good. He's the only one I've ever heard who can equally breakdown film on both boxing AND MMA. Most MMA guys can't understand our sport on this level, but he obviously can.
Modern Martial Artist is very good. I think Lee Wylie, and MMA's mate Hidden Gem are better, but they're all worth watching.
Wilson Kayden was the king of boxing film studies. Sadly, he stopped posting around the time of May-Pac.
Not so much a film rather than an article, but this is a pretty damn good piece which dissects articles on Vicente Saldivar. The Fight Site often does good work, and even though their head boxing guy is a complete bell end, I don't think anyone would argue that Flea doesn't know his shit - although, this particular page isn't actually written by Kyle. Dan Albert tends to do a good job and has recently done one of these on Ezzard Charles. Vicente Saldivar: The Subtle Storm — THE FIGHT SITE
