You don't have lewis at hw!! That's very surprising. Good call on dlh at lw. Completely forgot him. Also should mention that i only rated guys that fought in or after the 40s.
Solid list. I basically have the same guys for the most part. I dunno about Tarver at 175, I would probably replace him with Moorer.
Yeah, i knew tarver would be a controversial choice, but i think he had tremendous one punch power. But he often didn't fight as a puncher
I cant see a heavyweight puncher list without Lewis on it. Lewis is the biggest puncher ever. Not in a P4P sense, but in an absolute sense.
Yeah, I think those guys could generate more power than Lewis, even if none of them were as good as him in terms of technique and handspeed. I think what makes the really old school guy's seem a little unbelievable is the old timers who embellished everything they did. I also think they greatly benefit from fighting in an era where elite fighters often gave up massive advantages against veritable punch bags. When I say Bob Fitzsimmons is the best MW puncher ever, I'm not saying he definitely hits harder than Jackson because there's no way of knowing. I'm just saying his power is more proven by way of results. But then again, does anyone doubt Jackson being able to stop someone like Tom Sharkey if he teed off on him with all he's got?
Wlad was not a bigger puncher than Lewis. He just wasn't. Wlad had terrific technique - he threw the most textbook cross of any heavyweight champ not named Louis- but Lennox was a bigger banger. Lewis lifted Botha off the canvas, and lifted Holy off the canvas with a body shot. What he did to guys like Ruddock and Golota, and the punch he landed on Rock in the rematch, Wladimir doesn't have any displays like that.
Wlad was timid, so he didn't go in like Lewis did. Hence why he has less moments like that, but you can clearly see when he does put what he's got into his shots, he was a paralytic puncher. Plus, there's loads of guys who fought both who say Wlad hit harder. Emmanuel Steward always said Wlad hit harder too. Given the extensive padwork he'd have done with both, I believe him. Wlad's left hook on Pulev was as picture-esque as any Lewis KO.
Lewis, like most taller rangier heavyweights, feel a lot more at ease pot shotting shorter men. But you really got to see what his alter ego "medusa'' was really capable of, in terms of raw power and strength, when he was forced to pick on someone his own size. Vitali may have had an iron chin, but I bet he was looking a lot like his father did when the lid blew off the Chernobyl power plant back in the day.
one of Lewis's most definitive displays of power wasn't even a knockout.....it was his complete disarming of Tua.
Wlad was more evenly handed than Lewis, that much ill give him. But for one shot, Lewis' right was the biggest punch in the division's history.
I'd like to mention Curtis Sheppard for non great fighters (LHW). The guy managed to KO Maxim in 1 round (which is pretty incredible, really) and Archie Moore nominated him as one of the hardest punchers he fought.
While I thought of mentioning Sheppard, and he has my favourite nickname in boxing history, he doesn't really have anything of substance at 175, and spent most of his career significantly higher than LHW.
