It's a stereotype of sorts but like a lot of stereotypes they don't come from thin air. They aren't as rigidly defensive as they were years ago but generally speaking they're more tactical and defensive minded. Also there is difference between national teams and club sides. In comparison while the English game is usually considered faster paced and "more direct" for example it's not as if every team in the EPL plays accordingly.
