It really wasn't that bad a stoppage.

Once a sharp shooter has started hurting and dropping a come forward guy, how many times in the sport's history has it ended well for the come forward guy? 1/1000 times?

It's comical that yall are calling me a Porter hater, when I seem to be the only one looking out for Shawn here.

It was not gonna end nobly for him. It was early in the 10th round, and the best finisher in the sport had a full 3 more rounds to do damage to him.

Of Course it's the Boxing Community's "Place" to Criticize His Decision...Have YOU Never Criticized a Stoppage In Your Life???...If So, What Makes THIS Situation Unique???:Dont:...

If You Point to the Father-Son Aspect, that Only REINFORCES the Point REED Made; DON'T Work Your Son's Corner Then...

Like You, REED is Also a Parent...As a Pre-Teen, REED's Middle Daughter was a Fairly Accomplished Martial Artist (Judo and Taekwon - Do, Specifically), Competing Against DUDES More Times Than Not...Nerve Racking AF, to Say the Least...@ NO Point Was REED "Coaching" Her, However, Because he KNEW He'd Be OVER Protective If/When Shit Got ROUGH for Her...

So REED Sat His SCARED, Bitch Ass in the Crowd w/Everyone Else, Bit his Fucking Nails and Played Cheer Leader for his Daughter...

We Can "What If" All Day Bruh...There's ALSO the Possibility Shawn ISN'T Exhibiting CTE Symptoms 10 Years from Now...There's the Possibility of Getting Struck by Lightning, Hit by a Car, Shot by a Stray Bullet, etc...Shit Happens...

What we DO Know is There's Inherent Risks w/Being a Professional Fighter and Shawn Porter NEVER Flirted w/Being Stopped Previously...As Such, the Boxing Community is ABSOLUTELY Justified in Questioning the Stoppage...

Yeah, but Kenny's never been overprotective in the ring before. You didn't see him stopping the Spence fight.

He saw what he saw. He knows Shawn better than anybody, and he knew what was coming.

Only a handful of father-son combinations have in fact worked in boxing.

Looking at the replay, it didn’t appear to me that Porter was seriously hurt. I think he most certainly could have gone on.

Now if it was a Trinidad-Vargas type of situation I would most certainly have advocated for a stoppage.

You Say it's NOT the Boxing Community's "Place" to Speak on the Stoppage, Yet it's YOUR Place to Speak on Kenny Porter's THOUGHTS???:Dont:...

He Didn't KNOW What was Coming, He Made an ASSUMPTION...

Being COMPLETELY Honest, Diego Corrales Looked a LOT Worse After His 2nd 10th Round Knockdown vs. Castillo, Than Porter Did vs. Crawford...

But By YOUR Rationale, if Chico's Ol' Man Worked His Corner That Night, He'd Have Been JUSTIFIED in Stopping the Fight, Huh???...Sadly, Perhaps THE Most Dramatic Finish to a Fight We've EVER Witnessed Would've NEVER Happened, if That's the Case....

The Spence Fight is IRRELEVANT to the Discussion and Kenny NOT Stepping In There is of No Consequence...

In His OWN Words, Kenny Credited Shawn's "Preparation" for WHY he Stopped the Fight...Almost Like he was PUNISHING His Son On Some Self Serving Ass BULLSHIT...

REED Can Guarantee You This; If Shawn Porter EVER Fights Again, Kenny Porter WON'T Be the Lead Trainer in his Corner...

IN THE MOMENT, Shawn Wasn't Happy w/His Father's Actions...& He was CLEAR HEADED and COHERENT the Entire Time...

    Exactly...

    There's LEVELS to Everything...

Vargas Took a LOT More Punishment from a Historically HARDER Puncher and the WAY 'Nando Fell to the Canvas Bordered on LIFELESS...That WASN'T the Case w/Porter Though...

REED's Already Stated He'd Have Been FINE w/a Stoppage After a 3rd Knockdown, But As Is, the Bout was Stopped (a TAD) PREMATURELY...

Kenny might try to convince him a few more times to fight, so he can buy another car or some more jewelry... maybe pick up another young girlfriend.

Ever since I heard him in interviews saying Broner is lucky he didn't use martial arts on him, or that he was gonna beat up Crawford in an alley I've had a bad taste. The post fight interview only strengthens those thoughts.

The guy just has charlatan written all over him.

Do think it was a good stoppage though. Iron chinned fighters all of a sudden hitting the floor is never good. Look at Mayorga after Tito finally put him down.

the stoppage was very disturbing. right when crawford was on the verge of knocking all 53 teeeth out of porters mouth, we as boxing fans were deprived of that moment.

He absolutely would have been justified, he just shouldn't have done it. Which is my, and I'm certain, Xplosives stance on this stoppage. Just because of one extremely specific example - which isn't even really applicable as Corrales' old man wasn't in the corner - doesn't mean it that rule has to be applied to every early stoppage. Not to mention Crawford being a far more terrifying finisher than Castillo, and that Porter was in the worst position of his entire career.

    disagREED...

1st of All, REED KNEW Corrales' Ol' Man Wasn't Working the Corner When he Made the Comparison, But the Father Figure in Chico's Life DID Work his Corner for the Floyd Fight, When Corrales was Dropped 6 Times...

He Stopped the Fight and NEVER Worked Diego's Corner Again, as a Result...

2nd, Porter was Dropped TWICE His Entire Career, if REED's Not Mistaken, Prior to Tasting the Canvas Twice vs. Bud...A Fighter That's NEVER Been Stopped or Even CLOSE to Being Stopped, and Only Dropped TWICE In 30+ Fights DESERVED a Loooooooonger Leash Than he Was Given...

3rd, There's DEGREES of Being "Dropped"; It's NOT Like Porter was FLAT on His Back, Glassy Eye'd, Struggling to Beat the Count or ANY of That...Hell, He Had the Mental Wherewithal to Be Visibly PISSED @ Himself for Getting Dropped a 2nd Time...CLEARLY, He was COHERENT and CAPABLE of Continuing in That Moment...Even Exhibited DISAPPOINTMENT in the Immediate Aftermath of Being Stopped for the 1st Time...

You Call it the "Worst Position" of Porter's Career and REED Won't Disagree...Doesn't JUSTIFY the Fact it was Stopped Prematurely Though...And Kenny Porter's RATIONALE for Stopping the Fight Only Made Matters Worse...

Just Like Diego Corrales was AFFORDED a Looooooonger Leash, Just as Arturo Gatti was Routinely Afforded a Looooooonger Leash, Shawn Porter DESERVED a Loooooonger Leash...NATHAN In His Prior Fights Suggested it was Time to JUSTIFIABLY Stop That Bout WHEN it was Stopped...

I applaud Porter for being the guy who fought everyone and providing the only means of comparison. I also bemoan the fact that it was him in there because his style is eye cancer, I stick to YouTube highlights for his fights, and barring providing a stepping stone for Ennis, hope he's done now

Stoppage was premature but we weren't robbed IMO of a better outcome, I expect he would have hung on somehow if he got through round

Yeah, I really liked his demeanor after being hurt by Mean Machine, he wasn't there to play it safe but to get back to him. Quite different for how it was when he was facing that Russian dude or Beltran coming up. What a waste though that he seems happy to collect millions without really challenging himself.

REED Won't Make an OFFICIAL Prediction Until the Bout is Signed..

Having Said That, it's MUCH More Difficult Making a Case for Spence TODAY, Than it was Last Night, Prior to Crawford-Porter...

PRIME, Pre-Accident, Pre-Detached Retina Spence NEEDED that 11th Round Knockdown to SECURE His Win Over Porter, Whereas Crawford was SIGNIFICANTLY More Decisive in His Manner of Victory...

Porter was QUICKER of Hand/Foot Than Spence & the Edge in STRENGTH was Negligible...Yet Bud was CLEARLY Quicker and STRONGER than Porter...As REED Said During the Fightbeat Live Stream, Bud was "George Foremaning" Porter @ Times, Literally 2-Hand SHOVING Him Backwards, to Create Distance...

If Spence is Anything Short of the Very BEST Version of Himself, it's Hard Imagining Him Beating Crawford, as Much as it PAINS REED to Admit It...

Crawford would quite possibly stop the Spence who fought Danny.

The Brook version of Spence is needed to win. And I have serious doubts that the Brook version of Spence exists anymore.

I dont wanna sound like a broken record, but Boots is the biggest threat to Crawford.

Spence is an underdog, and Taylor really doesn't have much of a chance. Bud would eat Josh alive.

I thought the stoppage was objectively a bad stoppage if you just look at Porter and the situation. Porter was alert, coherent and had his legs. However, and this is where I disagree with Reed, the stoppage was justified by a father/trainer. If Porter wasn't trained by his dad, that fight doesn't get stopped. Zero chance. In that situation the fighter is given one more chance. If Porter was down again or against the ropes with his gloves up and just taking punches not firing back, then the stoppage would be correct. He doesn't have to actually get KO'd, he just has to be in another bad position. Being down 2 times in that round, he's skating on very thin ice in terms of being stopped.

The point is, that fight is never stopped if anyone other than Kenny is training Porter. No other trainer stops the fight. From Kennys perspective I guess it's like this.. In any fight, Porter can get knocked down or knocked out by a punch any time, thats just the risk involved and Kenny accepts that. If Porter goes down from a punch, it's ok to let him try to come back. If Porter goes down again then Kenny is now in a tough situation and as a dad you can start to panic at this point because the stakes raised significantly. Now Porter is likely to go down again and could be KO'd/hurt so it's much higher risk now. I think a dad gets a pass for stopping the fight at this point, even though no other trainer would get a pass.

It seems hypocritical but I can't really criticize Kenny for stopping it at that point when the stakes go up for him. Yeah Porter has a chance of catching Crawford like Eubank caught Watson or Maidana caught Ortiz after he was knocked down but it's really low percentage and whats much higher percentage is Porter getting KO'd. I guess you have to expect a stoppage like this when you have a father working his sons corner.

    Really great post.

Kenny had zero to gain from letting it go on, and neither did Shawn.

I think someone brought up Corrales-Castillo earlier, and maybe it was REED. The difference there is that Corrales was a devastating puncher, and always capable of ending, or altering a fight with one shot.

Shawn isn't a knockout puncher, nor was he able to seriously hurt Bud at any point. The ending was a foregone conclusion. Kenny did the right thing, and the important thing is, Shawn ultimately backed his call.

Josh Taylor was interviewed and also backed the call that Kenny made. I haven't heard many fighters outside of Spence complaining about it, and TBH Spence has turned into a bit of an asshole.

It's very very flawed thinking to pounce on a dad for a stopping a fight a weeeeee bit early.

If Maxim Dadaev had his father in his corner, he'd still be alive today.

Yeah his old man basically implied Shawn didn't do what he said either in the fight or during training so Daddy stopped it, what an arsehole.

Reality was Porter did about as OK as expected, perhaps better, (for a midget) and should have had a chance to recompose, adjust and get back into the swing of it IMO. They're not picking strawberries out there.

My issue is that Josh BARELY scraped by Regis, and Bud is levels better than Regis. My takeaway from that fight is that Prograis could have won if he fought smarter.

Crawford is past his prime I believe. He was quicker and sharper when he fought Horn 4 years ago. But he's still too much for Taylor. Josh has some significant defensive holes, and if Prograis and Ramirez are touching him up, the sport's top sharp shooter figures to have a field day with him.

That fight is dead though, as Bud just burned the bridge with Top Rank.

So, I think we might actually and finally get Crawford-Spence.

If Crawford and Arum are done working together, then I wonder what the future holds for Josh.

After Caterall, what does he do? Because I think he planned to then move for Crawford.

So maybe he stays at 140, and fights Jose Zepeda, then potentially Teofimo.

Or, he moves up to 147, but I'm not sure who he would face at 147 if Crawford is gone.

He'll face a drained Jeff Horn, a one legged Benavidez, an old Amir Khan, beats Kavaliauskas, a shot Kell Brook then drags Porter out of retirement. Arum grins menacingly, says fool me once, then bursts into flames.

TR is falling apart, and Arum is too narcissistic to see why. It's because the old Arum/King model of running a promotional entity like a dictatorship is dead.

Fast Eddie and Haymon are gonna take over because they at least understand that they have to portray the illusion that they are beholden to the fighters, and not vice versa.

Arum and King are relics from the era of "I own them."

When Arum dies, TR better pivot and start kissing fighters' asses, or else they won't be around in 10 years.
