Upcoming fight: Gary Russell Jr vs Mark Magsayo - Who wins?

Next weekend should be a fun match up. We FINALLY have a good interesting fight for Gary Russell Jr and it's against a hard punching Filipino Mark Magsayo. I'm expecting fireworks but it will also show us just how much Gary Russell Jr has left and if Magsayo will be the guy to finally end his title reign. I'm really looking forward to this one.

 

Hopefully Gary's sham of a career finally comes to an end.

Should he win, I think the plan is for him to fight Davis in spring/summer.

 

Don't know anything about Magsayo, but Russell career has mostly been a joke. He s starting to get up in age too so hopefully, we get to see him in meaningful fights soon so he can catchup all those lost years. Unlikely though as very few fighters manage to pull a Bernard Hopkins...

It's crazy how these fighters expect to fight once every year or two years and and remain at the top. If Gary had fought six months ago, then he would have easily been able to postpone a fight. No income for two years will make you push through to your own detriment. No one else to blame but himself.

 

I thought Russell was actually winning but he lost the championship rounds and that cost him. Magsayo was terrible. You have a one handed guy in there, throw some fucking punches, rough him up, start throwing jabs at his shoulder etc etc. They should make sure they cash out well because Magsayo won't be keeping the belt for long.

I'm glad Russell and Loma lost coming in with their injuries. They had big setbacks in their careers and had to deal with a lot of shit that they wouldn't have to deal with if they just waited and came in healthy. It was cringeworthy seeing Russell act like he was some smart tough guy for taking the fight. You lost the title and now you are on the shelf again and you lost a lot of money that you could have gained in a big fight. All because you didn't have the intellect to get healthy before fighting.

 

Fair, and for the most part I agree. But specifically in Russell's case, Imagine being known as a fighter who only fights once a year at best, and then he starts pulling out of fights. I can completely understand why he did it, and I think it's s lot better to mention his injury before the fight - when it was clearly real - than to just start winging about it afterward.
