Some catch it way better than others. Some scream about someone being hurt and they're not. Who is the best?
Some commentators are nothing more than company yes men. Take Lampley for example. He was infamous for rooting for the house fighter. During the Marquez vs Pacquio 4 fight when Pacquio was knocked out and Lampley kept saying "he's getting up" but Roy said "he's not getting up Jim" . Minute 25:40 Listen to Jim saying pac gonna get up. What tool .
Tim Ryan was the best at it as far as a blow-by-blow guy goes. Arguably the GOAT period. Roy was the best at it as an analyst.
To REED, Roy was THE 1st Color Commentator to Convey the HOW's/WHY's of Boxing, Strategically, Where Not Only the Layman/Casual Boxing Fan Could "Get" It, But He'd Also FORESHADOW What Would Eventually Transpire, More Times Than Not... REED NEVER Heard a Commentator Mention the Southpaw/Righty, Lead Foot on the OUTSIDE Advantage, Until Roy Jones Said It...Now It's Part of BASIC Boxing Knowledge, Almost... It Always AMUSES REED When People Try to Simplify Roy as an "Athlete Who Boxed"...But Even a BLIND Motherfucker Could Listen to Roy's Color Commentary and Glean Dude is MORE Than That... Roy Jones was a "Boxer Who was Athletic".... REED
It's a damn shame he didnt make Mayweather type money. If Roy was around today he would be bigger than life. He had a crowd pleasing style. He had all the ingredients to be a big star. Not saying hes not famous or rich. Im saying hes not Mayweather or Canelo rich. And he's not a world Icon like Ali or Tyson. Hes just Roy.
It was like the opposite of George Foreman. Foreman would drop occasional gems mixed in with a lot of weirdness, arguing just to be a contrarian, and getting thing wrong at the perfect time. Foreman said “Roy Jones is playing the feinting game and Griffin is benefiting by it” and Roy literally knocks him out a second later. Same thing happened in Cotto-Torres
If I remember correctly Roy was the only one who noticed and called that Alfonso Sanchez had been affected by a Mickey Ward body shot, whilst the rest of the crew were calling for the fight to be stopped in Sanchez's favour.
Roy watched fights and called important things faster than the others who were usually blabbering like morons. His calls in Vitali Vs Williams or Ward Vs Sanchez for examples. Roy was first....
How? Manny always called things after they happened by telling you he WAS ABOUT to tell you about what had just happened
Beat me to it . Also Klitschko's 3" hook on Danny Williams which to the untrained eye was an ineffective arm punch but which to the trained eye was a hurtful shot.
I find it weird that Leonard was so brilliant as a fighter, yet never offered one single SHRED of insight as an analyst. Nothing but recycled cliches, over and over. I dunno if it's that Leonard just doesn't see fights as well as Roy, or if he does, but just can't articulate it as well as Roy. I suspect it's C... he can see things in the ring and articulate them, but he's just too lazy and was just there to pick up a check by using recycled cliches, and reminding us every 15 minutes about the Hearns and Duran fights.
That's cause Lampley is an idiot. Tim Ryan and Barry Tompkins both had/have a far better fundamental understanding about boxing compared to Lamps.
Marv Albert could usually tell when someone was hurt. He had of a lot of experience at it, biting all those hookers in hotel rooms.
Does anyone remember that guy Pedro Fernandez who had a website , he was an ex San Francisco cop, he had this website which was basically him insulting everyone, like Tua. He'd say shit like "I used to see these Polynesians on my beat, all slow and lazy like Tua" . He hated the Klitschko's. When Mitch Halpern died he did this salacious piece that said things like "Fem was in the house when Mitch ate both barrells" or something like that.
Yes, I think it was called RingTalk or something and the guy was absolutely batshit insane. It's probably retrievable on the wayback machine if RingTalk was the actual name.
Thats it. It was all about how he was a 34 times Golden Gloves champion and AWARD WINNING RADIO SHOW HOST!!! He's got a few facebook pages with pictures of him and.........Martin Luther King etc. Back in the day there was a plethora of thse guys out there. It was that Golden Era before guys started covering their ass for fear of demonetization or cancellation or having some deranged Edwin Viruet fan show up at their door to threaten them. The net result was that dudes just came out and said shit. Classic example was Lampley and the "God" spat with Foreman over Naseem Hamed towards the end of the Barrera fight. They went back and edited that out. Lots of Pedro Fernandez content would simply get deleted or blocked today.
When SecondsOut was aggregating boxing news stories, when Fightnews.com was the place to go for results, just before Maxboxing acquired status {and died} .........it was that late 90's to early 2000's period, about 5 years, there was loads of have-a-go heroes voyzing their pingz . He was one of them. Hated the Klitschkos. Hated Tua. He sounded like a moderately more sophisticated version of Pops Garcia with the whole "Fucking outsiders stealing our belts" etc.
I knew him when I was a kid, he was in the CSAC with my dad. While he was nice to me and my dad, I could tell sort of tell he was an asshole. He just had that vibe. I remember his radio show. He said Mike Tyson was coming on it. During that show, people kept calling saying it wasn’t really Tyson, it was just a guy who kind of sounded like him. I think Pedro is a PI nowadays.
Cool story. He is an Ex-Cop and from what I've learned about Cops he's probably a reformed asshole at best. I think it is:- 1. Highly unlikely Mike went on his show. 2. Highly likely that the guy would pretend he had Mike on his show
