Has anybody here, aside from Reed, participated in the business side of pro boxing? Have you been a promoter, manager, matchmaker, assistant or anything such? It would be nice to hear some stories.

Personally I did matchmaking for one pro night several years ago. I brought in four opponents for the hometown guys. It wasn't quite world class, as the four guys had a combined record of 1-36.

Nevertheless, I negotiated their flights, prizes etc. I also remember their manager's promise "your fighters will win easily". Well, one of them didn't

But on a serious tip, no, I haven't. But im interested in hearing responses.

I've trained fighters since the early 90s, including a world ranked fighter that subsequently fought for a world title. My partner and I currently advise a handful of boxers that are developing their skills. I am friends with a lot of business side people in boxing, some of whom are pretty well known. That is entirely due to my late friend; he not only introduced me to these people but also sold them on my abilities in the gym. He was very respected so I got a chance. My partner spoke highly of me and he, too is well respected- he trained 3 world champions, an Olympian and a Pan American games winner, and he convinced Jackie Kallen to take a chance on Nonito Donaire. If I ever again feel like leaving Montana for Texas, we will probably go into promoting local shows to build our fighters and those of a couple other trainers, one of whom trained Oliver McCall during his "comeback."
A pretty good friend of mine is a matchmaker- he did the undercard for the Lomachenko fight last weekend and, coincidentally, a Montana guy was on that show. I met him when I went to Oklahoma City several years ago to work with a fighter there. a man that is possibly the most successful manager of all time told me that if I ever come to my senses and leave Montana that he will have me on TV in Mexico- he provides the fighters for the ESPN Mexico- more than Cantinflas. Because of this man, my partner and I had, pre pandemic, basically an open door at Golden Boy and had 3 guys get signed there in just a few short months. Two of them gave up boxing all together when they were unable to go to a gym for a long period. The third dumped his trainer- and he got the opportunity because his trainer is in our circle (about 6 of us that met because our mutual deceased friend)- and he lost his last fight and is probably retired at 20.

I trained a guy that sparred Juan Diaz when Diaz was a world champion and my friend was 3-0. My friend had a 2 fight amateur career- he pretty much taught himself to fight by watching the Toney v Holyfield fight over and over. His professional trainer is a very well connected guy, so my friend sparred a lot of rounds with some very big name fighters.

I don't think anyone would watch that fight and want to be Holyfield.

He was a huge James Toney fan. He later sparred over 30 rounds with Floyd and adopted elements of his style.

Toney and Qawi were such natural talents. Both picked up the sport relatively late, but just "got it." Developed skills that 99% of boxers who start at 6-7 years old could never develop.

You joke but there was a clown on secondsout who claimed he beat Trinindad in the amateurs. Even worse, he said he knocked him out in the 11th round. An amateur match going 11 rounds.

A little off topic. When you say partner do you mean business partner. Or partner as in same sex marraige partner???

I was just trying to dig for clues to figure out who he was in real life. Don't know too many gay trainers. That kind of narrows it down if he is.

Good topic. I never expected to have actual promoters, matchmakers posting here. I used to post at yahoo boxing chat and the Iceman Vin Scully would make an appearance from time to time and chatted with us. He had some good knowledge.

I find him to be very attractive, an astute and compassionate man. But his wife is way hotter than I am so we have agreed to be business partners.

REED's Proud to Say He Was a Matchmaker for Bouts Consisting of 2 U.S. Olympians (Luis Yanez, Ricardo Williams), 1 Former World Champion (Maurice Hooker) & 1 Current World Champion (Jermall Charlo)...

Williams was on the Back End of His Career, Trying to Get a Bit of Traction 1 Final Time...The Yanez, Hooker, Charlo Bouts were All VERY Early in Their Pro Careers...CLUB SHOWS In Every Single Instance...

CLUB SHOW Matchmaking is the Hardest Thing REED's Ever Done; Matchmaking w/the Budget of Top Rank, PBC, Golden Boy, Matchroom, etc., is a Fucking JOKE By Comparison...

You know Arnie, then. For the love of God I can't remember his last name. But he was the early $ guy behind the fighter from OKC. His involvement with Maurice came from seeing them spar way before they fought for a world title.
