Any opinions on Eddie Perkins? He’s a HOF fighter that mostly fought at 140 pounds. He’s even fought guys such as Locche, Napoles, Loi(whom he beat in their second fight) but lost to them when he fought in their backyard, some even saying that they were controversial. This guy is underrated and underexposed due to lack of footages but I recently watched his available fight, particularly against Ryu Sorimachi and he looks great. It would be nice to see more Perkins fights available because he is certainly a quality fighter from what little footage we have of him. Just from that fight alone I can see him holding his own against other 140 fighters such as Cervantes, Pryor, or Tszyu.

Perkins was a beautiful technician and I wish there was more footage of him.

Anytime I watch old fights (circa 50s and 60s) it strikes me how much the art of jabbing has been lost. The jab is primarily used as a range finder now, and as a means to set up power punches. Of course, there are exceptions, I mean in general.

Guys like Perkins, Ike Williams, Ortiz, Gavilan, Harold Johnson, Joe Brown, Jimmy Carter, ect., really threw piston-like jabs as weapons.

That's the ONE thing I did like about Oscar, I must admit. He had his faults as a fighter, but he threw that jab like a guy from the 60s.

Matter of fact, Foreman even said during the Quartey fight that Oscar had a jab reminiscent of the 50s/60s fighters.

Yeah, those were the days when the jab was more than just a range finder but as a major tool in the arsenal. Hagler, Hearns, Holmes, Lewis, Quartey, Whitaker, Wright, Kalambay, just to name a few.

It sucks how under utilized the jab has become as a major weapon nowadays. The only fighters with a good jab are guys like Inoue, Spence, Crawford.

Speaking of 140 Champs, Cervantes had an all time great jab as well.

    Yes he did.

How do you see Eddie Perkins do against a guy like Antonio Cervantes stylistically speaking?

If you know me as a poster for a long time, then you'd know Cervantes is one of my all time favorite fighters. I think very very highly of his peak in the mid 70s, and I'd probably take him to decision Perkins.

I've always been fascinated by the idea of a Carlos Ortiz vs Cervantes MM.

It just occurred to me that Perkins' style was a lot like Buddy McGirt's. Or more accurately, McGirt's style was a lot like Perkins'. Buddy I think was more dangerous as a puncher tho.

Shit, even Carmen Basilio had a better jab than 90% of fighters today and he was considered a brawler back in the 50s.

I like perkin jab, but in the few fights i saw of him, he seems to land with the back of the hand a lot when he jabs, and thats a foul in modern boxing

Yes I know that Cervantes is one of your favorite fighters and I can totally see why. To be honest with you I didn't get to fully appreciate him until a couple years ago. I remember back then I used to only see him as that champion that came up short against Locche, Benitez, Pryor and not even fully realizing just how great of a fighter he really was in his prime. Watching his fights against DeJesus, Kadota, Frazer, and his stoppage win over Locche made me a believer. He really was an awesome 140 pound champ.
