He seemed to have pissed away a large part of his early career fighting scrubs in Europe for the Acaries brothers before finally getting some major kudos with what should have been a win over Vargas. Fuckin Oscar kept his career alive with a win over a badly diminished Vargas and he plain stayed away from Winky. Winky then showed Oscar how it was done, by unpicking Tito. Oscar, Floyd....wanted no part of Winky. He'd have battered Cotto and Margarito. I think the guy would be a major star today....he'd have dealt with that Fat Ginger easily.
Wright vs. Canelo is a fascinating matchup. But his wins over Mosley and arguably beating Taylor and Vargas put him ib the same category as those other guys. And he got plenty of dates, plenty of attention and presumably, plenty of cash. So no. He didn't blow shit in my opinion.
He damn sure didn't get shafted against Simon. Simon beat him extremely clearly. He got fucked against Taylor. Winky beat Jermain like 9-3 or 8-4. Wright-Vargas was a draw imo. I could see it 7-5 for either guy. It was a very close fight.
Winky was an excellent fighter but his two biggest wins are over faded Trinidad and Quartey. He was definitely robbed against Taylor.
He never was a popular fighter, but that was due to his style and average personality. He was "unlucky" with the judges a few times, but never was really robbed imo I dont believe for a second that he would be a major star today, for the aforementioned reasons
Nah I think his time in EUROPA he spend mastering his defense and skillset... He had a pretty good career considering the years spent outside the USA. He should've tried getting better opponent after teh Vargas fight and fought Trinidad at 154 in 2001. Otherwise his career would've been the same....DLH wasn't going to fight him...no win situation. Hopkins was King at 160. Who else was he going to fight?
Agreed. Even though he was an excellent fighter he's not going to sell tickets as a headliner in any era particularly when you add the dull personality. I wouldn't call him an outright bore, but it was pretty tedious watching him with the earmuff defense and grins.
No matter in which era he fought, he would still be the same fighter : unspectacular and defensively oriented, hard to beat and hard to look good against, no power and quiet personality. These kind of fighters are always avoided because they are dangerous and they don't sell... Considering that, I feel Wright had a very successful career. I think he might even have overachieved financially. So no, he wouldn't be a superstar today, he'd probably be whining he cannot get fights...
