Gomez had trouble making 122 and the same day weigh ins hurt him. Morales eventually had problems making 122- when he fought Jesus Chavez he spent almost 2 hours in the toilet before getting on the scales- but he had 36 hours to recover. At his best at 122 Morales most likely stops the Gomez that fought Pintor and lost his legs very early in the fight. Years ago, pre youtube, I purchased videos of probably 10, maybe 12 Gomez fights. Nothing that I saw in those randomly selected fights- all at 22- led me to believe that he was invincible. I saw a guy that got hit, lost his legs, but never gave up and had heart for days. I never understood how he beat Zarate and didn't see the fight until fairly recently; that was the best fight of Gomez's life and I tend to believe it when Zarate says he entered that fight suffering from the flu. I just haven't seen the fights that make me think that Gomez was anything above Rosario- good or very good but not great- but I grew up watching Mexican fighters, in Mexican neighborhoods, and in Mexican gyms and I (almost) always want the Mexican fighter to win, so maybe I have a bias.
Gomez no better than Rosario????????????? Huhhhhh?????? Gomez was better than Rosario at everything. Not only physically, but mentally. Rosario was a bit of a mental midget. He didn't have any of the heart and toughness that Gomez had. Gomez also had better stamina than Rosario by leaps and bounds.
Rosario was like a poor man’s Gomez. Really good fighter but inferior to Gomez in everything, especially in durability and fortitude.
I just haven't seen that, in any of the fights that I have seen. Gomez- no doubt- was tougher mentally, but he had to be because, in just about every fight of his that I have seen, he lost his legs and struggled. Skill wise, they were very similar in my opinion.
I think Gomez was more dynamic and creative with his offense than Rosario. Better variety in combinations and more creative. I think Tito had better offense than Rosario, honestly. Neither guy is as good as Gomez.
It's a good point - everything with Gomez was life and death. It made for great fights and a lot of drama and he was easy to root for. But he was no virtuoso. Edit: similar story with Morales although he was probably more durable.
That's categorically false and demonstrates that neither of you have seen many of his fights. It's a very inaccurate statement. Before the Sanchez fight, Gomez had NO difficult fights. He was extremely dominant. Post-Sanchez, his only difficult fight at 122 was Pintor. Those are facts. Cite examples to that bullshit claim. "Everything life and death". Lmao! You're literally making shit up. Yeah, he was considered P4P #1 over Leonard and Hagler because he was struggling in every fight. Makes a lot of sense...
Morales had a better chin than Gomez. That one area can't be disputed. I struggle to name anything else he had over Gomez. Gomez was a bigger puncher, FAR more athletic, better defensively, threw better combos, was a better body puncher, and perhaps most importantly, was LEAGUES better when it comes to stamina. We all know that stamina was a weakness of Morales. It was a big time strength of Gomez. His gas tank was incredible. There's little reason to favor Morales. He couldn't outbox Gomez, he couldn't win a firefight, and given the huge gap in stamina, he sure as fuck is not winning a battle of attrition. Two guys beat Gomez before he became a shot fighter: Sanchez and Nelson. And both at 126. I'm sorry, but Morales wasn't in the league of either of those guys.
Morales did have a good beard, but he also had never been tagged by someone who had the firepower that Gomez had. You just wonder how he would cope with that power seeing as he took a lot of flush shots. The fact that he appears healthy and NOT punch drunk these days is amazing.
